Dawn is a soloist and, at that, a popular one. But before he began his solo journey, E’Dawn was part of a boy group. The boy group Dawn was in was Pentagon. Dawn was a part of the Pentagon for two years. Over the period of two years, Dawn was able to accumulate a loyal fanbase for him. Even after he left the group, fans were supportive of his new solo career. Currently, he has released 2 EPs and three singles since 2019. He has also produced songs for K-drama OSTs and has a successful career even after leaving the popular group. Here, we shall look into his career as a Pentagon member.
Dawn was born on 1 June 1994 as Kim Hyo-jong. His journey until now has been impressive. From being literally kicked out from his previous company and then establishing a much more successful solo career, he has come a long way. Even as a part of Pentagon, Dawn used to write lyrics for Pentagon and has done songwriting for major tracks. Along with his great rapping skills, Dawn is also known to be a formidable dancer. His locking and popping style of dancing is loved by the fans. Everyone, including his former Pentagon members, agreed that Dawn became a completely different person when he danced. He dances as if his body wasn’t one whole unit.
E’Dawn As A Pentagon Group Member
Pentagon was created through a survival show called Pentagon maker. Much before their debut, Dawn had also auditioned for JYP Entertainment but was eliminated. He then participated in the special stage at KBS Song Festival in 2013. In 2014, he also danced at Thai actor James Jirayu’s first concert. Eventually, in 2015, Cube Entertainment announced the debut of the Pentagon after three years of BtoB debut.
On Pentagon Maker, the members were judged on the basis of their individual talents and talents as a unit. Initially, only seven members were selected in the final lineup of Pentagon, which didn’t have Dawn. But when the group made its official debut in October 2016, it included three more eliminated members, including Dawn. His stage name as a member of the group Pentagon was E’Dawn. The debut EP featured Dawn’s composition “Organic Song”. The group rose to popularity just after its debut. Pentagon especially gained a lot of fans in Japan.
In 2018, when Dawn and Hyuna revealed their relationship, Cube announced that Dawn wouldn’t be a part of the promotional activities of their upcoming comeback with EP Thumbs Up. However, Dawn participated in the songwriting of tracks for the EP but didn’t show up in promotions. Eventually, in September 2018, Cube announced that they had terminated their contract with Dawn. In November 2018, Dawn officially left Pentagon. Pentagon now has nine members.
Dawn As A Member of Group Triple H
Triple H was a group formed by Cube Entertainment in 2017. The label announced its artist Hyuna has formed a unit with other label mates. It was then revealed it was Pentagon members and leader Hui and Dawn. The group Triple H was a really fresh idea, with songs that deviated from the regular K-Pop music. The music videos were a visual treat for many, but many also thought they were inappropriate for showing sexual content and references to crime. However, the group managed to get great rankings on music charts. Dawn contributed as a lyricist and music producer for the group.
In 2018, the group came out with its second EP Retro Futurism wherein too Dawn contributed to the title track Retro Future with lyrics writing. He is further credited as the lyricist in the other track of the EP. Triple H went on to release two EPs. But after Hyuna and Dawn’s relationship reveal, and with both of them leaving Cube, the group can be considered as good as disbanded.
Solo Career & Departure From Pentagon
After leaving Cube entertainment in November 2018, Dawn was announced to be joining Psy’s new label, P Nation. Dawn and Hyuna both joined P Nation. He changed his stage name to Dawn and eventually made his solo debut in November 2019 with the single Money. Further, he has helped Hyuna in writing her single Party, Feel, Love. He also featured on DEMIAN’s song LOVE% in March 2021. In Septem 2021, Dawn and Hyuna released their first collaborative project, 1+1.
