Cora, an amateur paleontologist, believes it’s a dinosaur, which horrifies the dashing Reverend William Ransome (Hiddleston). As a result, a Victorian-era conflict between science and theology erupts faster than a smoldering paraffin lamp. Plot Summary of “The Essex Serpent”
When Cora Seaborne’s smart, controlling husband dies, she enters her new life as a widow with mixed feelings: her marriage was not a joyful one. This woman of remarkable intelligence and curiosity, married at the age of nineteen, was unsuited to the role of society wife. In the aftermath of the burial, Cora departs London for a visit to coastal Essex with her inquisitive and compulsive eleven-year-old son, Francis, and the boy’s nanny, Martha, her fiercely protective friend.
While appreciating the sights, Cora learns of an intriguing tale spreading further up the river about a terrifying beast roaming the marshes and claiming human life. The mythological Essex Serpent is claimed to have reappeared after nearly 300 years, killing a young man on New Year’s Eve.
Cora, a sharp amateur biologist with no time for religion or superstition, is immediately intrigued, convinced that what the locals believe to be a mythical sea beast may be a previously unknown species. She is introduced to local priest William Ransome, who is eager to investigate. Will is also skeptical of the rumors.
But, unlike Cora, this man of religion believes the stories are the result of moral panic or a departure from true belief.
These apparent opposites who agree on nothing eventually find themselves inextricably drawn together and wrenched apart – an intense relationship that will impact both of their lives in unexpected ways.
