The Essex Serpent Season 1 Episode 2 Recap
The Essex Serpent Season 1 Episode 2 picks up with Cora waking up from a nightmare that sees her getting attacked by a serpent. After what went down with Gracie, Cora still intends to stay while Martha leaves with Luke and Spencer to London. Cora finds herself unwelcomed during Gracie’s funeral but Will assures her that’s not the case. Cora later tries to talk to Henry about Gracie and Serpent only for him to ask her to leave the house.
Meanwhile, Will made sure that Naomi knows that Gracie’s death was an accident. There is no serpent coming for her, it’s just that she drowned. Cora and Frankie later visit Will’s residence. While Frankie befriends Stella, Cora and Will find themselves going deep into conversation about fossils and soon into Cora’s abusive past.
Eventually while walking by the beach, Cora and Will witness a red-sailed ship which brings a smile to their face while Cora sheds a tear. But on the other hand, when it comes to Naomi, she saw a serpent in the same waters. After reuniting with Martha, Cora returns to Will to discuss what they saw at the beach.
They come to the conclusion that what they see as science is something that common people with no knowledge will always see as Sorcery. It’s true as the people of Essex were getting ready to fight the Serpent. They plan on capturing it.
Will believes sharing Cora’s knowledge with the children of the town will help. So Cora does take a class but questions about the serpent leave her baffled as she wanted to calm the children.
Cora was not able to answer their questions clearly. This made the kids believe that she is hiding the truth. The serpent is indeed coming for them. The episode came to a close with Naomi suffering from a seizure. The kids came to believe that she is summoning the serpent.
Amidst all of this, back in London, Luke and Spencer meet with another young patient who needed heart surgery. This time around Luke succeeds and makes history. Martha and Spencer further help the patient and her sister with rent as they were in financial crisis.
The Essex Serpent Season 1 Episode 2 Review
The Essex Serpent Season 1 Episode 2 delves deep into developing the relationship between Will and Cora. The show spent time trying to establish the thoughts of different individuals. Especially of Will & Cora and how they found a point where they agreed with each other. Plus no matter how much one tries to change the perception of others, there is a high chance they will fail.
The same went down when Cora tried to invest her knowledge with the kids of the town. They had a hard time accepting it as they have lived with the truth they have been told for the most part of their life. We hope to see that change in the coming episodes. But according to the plot, it’s just going to get hard for Cora.
Similarly, back in London, nobody believed in Luke. Until he managed to save a life with the heart surgery he hinted to do. Apart from all of that, the show continues to hint at the romance between Will and Cora. So far the show seems adamant that there is no serpent, only science and common people see it as a sorcery.
