The very famous and talented racehorse, Rich Strike is from Manitoba. His mother is from the southwest of Winnipeg, in Brunkild. There were no horses before Rich in the Derby, it is one of the rarest places a racehorse can belong to. Darren Dunn, the CEO of the Downs says,” It was just a lot of pride here in Manitoba” after the stunning victory of this horse. The colt, from a rare location like Manitoba, entered the racing world and stunned everybody with his awesome win.

All about the Kentucky Derby Winner
Rich Strike foaled on earth on 25th April 2019. He is an American Thoroughbred racehorse of chestnut color. This colt has a white blaze and two white socks on his hind legs. He is approximately 3 years old and is bred at Calumet Farm in Kentucky. He is the offspring of Gold Strike, the Canadian Champion Three-Year-Old Filly of 2005. He is the first Grade I winner of Keen Ice. From September 2021, the owner of this colt is Richard Dawson, RED TR-Racing. The trainer of this racehorse is Eric Reed now and earlier Joe Sharp used to train him.
Rich Strike’s win in Kentucky Derby 2022
Recently, Rich Strike won the Kentucky Derby race that happened on 7th May 2022. Although, he was not even in the field until the scratch of Ethereal Road. The owner, Richard Dawson, came to know about a change just 30 seconds before the deadline. And the change was that Rich Strike was added to the list of racers from the also-eligible list from the derby. The other top horses in the field were Epicenter, Zandon, and Taiba, but Rich outperformed them all racing at 80-1 odds. He became the tenth Kentucky Derby winner from Calumet Farm. Also, he became the second-biggest longshot winning Kentucky Derby after Donerail in 1913.
Rich Strike’s career
Rich Strike has played numerous races- Maiden Special Weight, Maiden Claiming, Allowance Optional Claiming, Gun Runner Stakes, Leoonatus Stakes, John Battaglia Memorial stakes, Jeff Ruby Steaks, and recently Kentucky Derby. He started his career with Maiden Special Weight at Ellis Park on 15th August 2021. Then he continued to play the other races. In the most recent race, it was very unexpected for this horse to win as he was not even in the field at the beginning. But he won the race making his trainer, owner, as well as jockey proud.

The list of all the jockeys of the colt in the races includes Ricardo Santana Jr, Adam Besschizza, Julien Leparoux, and Sonny Leon. For the last four races, Sonny Leon has been riding him. The winning race of the Kentucky Derby 2022 was also the first graded stakes win for Sonny Leon, his jockey. But unfortunately, Sonny Leon is facing his suspension this week for riding carelessly.
