The highly anticipated slice-of-life series Kawaii Dake Ja Nai Shikimori-San or Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie recently dropped its second episode on 17 April 2022 and it gave us more of an insight into our two protagonists who are worlds apart, but just what each other need in their lives. The show is about Izumi and Shikimori – two high school sweethearts who have a happy and healthy relationship. Despite the fact that one is a popular and pretty person who stands out in the crowd and the other is a bland, unlucky plain male protagonist, the two work out pretty well. It is the classic case of opposites attract.
Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie is a play on the cliched popular boy and girl-next-door plot – only, the roles are reversed and we see how Shikimori-san is the one who wears the pants in the relationship. She constantly protects the meek and passive Izumi from his own bad luck and is a completely cool girl who kabedons her boyfriend and wins the hearts of all customers when going bowling. Despite the fact that she tries hard to be cute in Izumi’s eyes, she ends up making him fall in love with her even more by being her true, dependable, and cool self.

Kawaii Dake Ja Nai Shikimori-San Episode 2 Recap
In Episode 2 of Shikimori Is Not Just a Cutie, titled “Wind and Clouds, Ball Sports Tournament!”, we catch a glimpse of what Shikimori is like, to people around her. The dimensions of how different our protagonists are being widened. The episode is a classic anime trope of a tournament episode – the boys have a football match while the girls have a volleyball tournament.
Izumi, with his bad luck, is mostly seen suffering and getting hurt by multiple incidents save those times when Inuzuka or Shikimori looks out for him. He gets hospitalized in the medical room when a ball comes straight to his face, knocking him out. We see a sweet moment of interaction where he confesses to Shikimori how he is upset about not being able to protect her always.
Shikimori is hyped by how supportive Izumi is of her always and when he comes to see her volleyball match against the school team ace, she gets even more fueled up. Nekozaki’s team ends up winning because of Shikimori and she is herded by crowds of fangirls who are all over how cool she is. This is an important point in the series as we see that these two characters are ‘from different worlds’, in Izumi’s words. Shikimori is naturally charming, pretty enough to be popular, and great at standing out with her athletic abilities and cool nature. Izumi on the other hand is plain, like any other guy, and extremely ‘uncool’ due to his clumsiness and passive behavior.
Yet we are blessed with a wholesome ending where these two talk about how different they both are, but are just what the other needs.

The next episode of Kawaii Dake Ja Nai Shikimori-San is titled “After Unhappiness, Fine Weather”. Kawaii Dake Ja Nai Shikimori-San 3 is set to release on 24 April 2022 in Japan and on 23 April 2022 in the United States, United Kingdom, and Europe.
