The anime world almost always tends to deliver the best of it. We all have seen fantastic anime. Anime like Naruto, Attack on Titan, One Piece, etc., have been some of the best products of the anime industry. Naruto Shippuden finished way back in 2017.
One Piece has been ongoing for more than two decades. While Attack on Titan is shattering records with its Final Season almost coming to an end. Naruto Shippuden was followed by Boruto: Naruto Next Generations.
Boruto has not been much good lately, and fans have been calling it out for a long time. There are much more anime that have not lived up to their expectations, as we discuss a whole list of anime that got ruined by their sequels.
We all have seen some pretty amazing anime throughout our life. Some anime left a deep impact on us while others could not. Some anime started poorly and got better over time, while others did just the opposite.
If you have ever wondered what all are the anime that have been ruined by their sequels? You are at the right place. This article is all about superb anime which have been ruined by their sequels.
The Promised Neverland Season 2
The Promised Neverland is a story about foster children. Emma, Ray, and Norman are best friends and live in the Grace field house along with other orphans.
Emma soon discovers that the reality is not what they all thought to be. The children are just food for the demons lurking behind the walls. All the kids start their training for the escape. Ultimately by the end of Season 1, they all manage to escape.
Season 1 was loved by fans all over the world. Even the critics liked it. Hopes were high with Season 2 too. Everyone expected the creators to give another masterclass, but Season 2 was a really bad flop.
It could not live up to the potential of its First Season. One of the major problems of the failure of Season 2 was that the creators went away from the manga. Creators of the show ditched the manga and tried creating something new, which was badly met with. The pace of the show was also very bad.
And to top up all the disasters of the 2nd Season, the ending was even worse. One thing the fans disliked the 2nd Season for the most was the exemption of Yugo.
Yugo is a fan-favorite character and was excluded from the anime. The Goldy Pond arc (described by some fans as probably the best arc) was also excluded.
Boruto: Naruto Next Generations
Naruto is often regarded as the best anime of all time. So it is natural to expect the same thing from its successor Boruto. Boruto’s start was good.
We see Boruto and Kawaki fighting each other atop a destroyed stone face of Naruto and a destroyed Konoha village in the background. The show does not have good animation.
The plot is, most of the time, senseless. Moreover, Naruto and Sasuke have been nerfed. The very first arc of Boruto was not good. Boruto only felt a little bit good during the Chunin exams arc where Momoshiki attacked Konoha.
Since Kawaki’s introduction, the show has gained a bit of pace. The show touched its height with the fight between Naruto, Sasuke, and Boruto against Isshiki Otsutsuki, where Naruto used the Baryon mode. The best moments in Boruto so far have included Naruto and Sasuke.
The show does not contain the excitement Naruto Shippuden had. All the plot twists, deaths, fight scenes, character development, is what made Naruto Shippuden successful.
Boruto so far only has good fight scenes, and that too involves Naruto and Sasuke. Although the manga of Boruto has been going well, the anime is just a disappointment for most of the fans.
Naruto and Sasuke have carried the show so far. With Naruto losing Kurama and Sasuke losing his rinnegan, we can’t expect much from these two anymore.
Durarara!! Season 2
Durarara!! also known as DRRR!! is a light novel series. It is written by Ryohgo Narita. The story follows Mikado Ryuugamine, who has always wanted an exciting life.
His childhood friend invites him to move to Tokyo together. They move to Tokyo and thus start their adventure. They both see the legendary Black Rider on their first day in the city. Soon the chaos unfurls with supernatural beings attacking the city, gang wars, and amidst all this is Mikado.
The anime became highly popular and was even named one of the best anime of the 2010s. But the 2nd Season was a massive disappointment. The story did not change much and was easily predictive.
The animation was also very bad. Many fans have called out, saying the dialogue delivery wasn’t good either. The dialogues were repetitive too. Overall, fans did not like the 2nd Season. Although the light novel is done exceptionally well, the anime disappointed the fans.
One Punch Man Season 2
One Punch Man debuted in December of 2015 and soon became one of the best anime to be made. The anime gave us the main character, who is the strongest person in its universe.
Thus, fans expect a lot of fights. We had many fights but also saw a different side of the shounen genre. We see our hero struggling because he has not faced any worthy opponent.
In his struggles, there is a lot of comedy and hilarious jokes. We also get memorable side characters which make the show more worth watching.
In 2019, almost four years later, we got One Punch Man Season 2. Many fans have said that the animation for the 2nd Season was really bad.
The animation budget for the 1st Season was a lot more than the 2nd Season. The animation director was changed in Season 2. The sound director was also changed in the 2nd Season.

Psycho-Pass Season 2
Psycho-Pass is another famous anime ruined by its sequel. It is a cyberpunk psychological thriller anime. The First Season did a spectacular job setting up a dystopian world, establishing various conflicts and good character development.
Psycho-Pass 2 was a terrible sequel. It was not much different from the 1st Season. It mostly explored the same storylines as the First Season. The motives of both the villains were the same, which was easily conspicuous.
Also, the popular character of Kogami Shinya was not there in the 2nd Season, and his absence was dearly experienced. 2nd Season was not something new on its own. Rather it was a badly made parody of the 1st Season.
Tokyo Ghoul √a
Tokyo Ghoul was released in 2014 and soon took over the world. With each passing Episode, fans wanted more of it. It became a worldwide success in a little amount of time and was expected to deliver more such masterclass in the future.
The action sequences, character development, and innovative storyline are what made the anime so successful.
Anime fans want the anime to be loyal to the manga. This is where Tokyo Ghoul failed. The creators decided to take a bizarre step in Season 2.
They did not follow the manga and went in their own direction. Season 2 had Ken Kaneki join a terrorist organization focused on liberating ghouls using any means possible. The idea was not at all good and was met with harsh criticism by the fans.
Dragon Ball GT
Dragon Ball is another famous anime. Almost every anime fan has watched this show. Everyone knows how much of a great show this is.
With badass heroes to super cool villains, a good storyline, extremely well development of characters, and beautiful animation, the show has been a hit ever since its release. The show follows the story of our beloved Goku and his journey to becoming the strongest.
Dragon Ball GT was the sequel to the world-famous Dragon Ball Z. One of the major reasons for Dragon Ball GT’s failure was the walkaway of the creator.
Its original creator Akira Toriyama abandoned the show, saying he did not want to work on dragon ball anymore. Thus, the show was not able to find much inspiration for something new and interesting to deliver.
The show turned Goku into a kid right from the start. Instead of focusing on powerful characters like Vegeta and Piccolo, creators still focused on a kid Goku without any abilities. Trunks was also massively changed from his original form, which the fans did not like at all.
In short, the series was another race against time for our heroes to get their hands on the dragon balls, something which the fans had already seen. After the disappointment of Dragon Ball GT came the movies Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods and Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F.
These movies brought much-needed hope to the fans and got the series back on track. The show was further saved by the arrival of the new series Dragon Ball Super which has been successful so far.
Berserk (2016)
Berserk is a very popular anime and manga from the late 1990s. Every anime fan knows Berserk and how much of a great anime it is.
The story revolves around a mercenary named Guts and Griffith, leader of a mercenary band called the Band of Hawk. The anime first came out in 1997. It was a hit back then. All the Berserk fans were happy when a reboot was announced.
The 2016 reboot of Berserk was not exactly a reboot but carried the story forward. Though it carried the story forward, all the reviews and the overall show were another major disappointment. The animation was very bad and childish.
The sound design was also awful. Many of the good scenes from the manga were even cut from the anime, which the fans did not like. As a result, Berserk (2016) was a total failure. A reboot of the 2016 rebooted Berserk is needed for the show to get back on track again.
Danmachi Season 3 (Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon)
Another anime that is ruined due to its sequels, yes, not one sequel but two. Is it wrong to try to pick up girls in a dungeon is a light novel written by Fujino Omori. Seeing the success of the light novel, it was adapted into an anime series soon.
The first Season of Danmachi was released on April 4, 2017, and ran till June 27, 2017. The plot of the anime is based on the adventures of Bell Cranel.
He is a 14-year-old boy looking for new adventures. He is the only member of the Hestia Familia. His dream is to become as powerful as Ais Wallenstein, a famous swordswoman. Soon they both meet and set out on an epic adventure.
Season 2 and 3 were not liked by fans due to many reasons. Fans believe that the 2nd Season was rushed very fast. Many points important to the main storyline were not even covered.
The animation was choppy, especially in the battles where fans wanted the best animation possible. Many fans have gone as far as saying that the only good thing about Danmachi Season 2 was its opening.
With Season 2 letting down, fans had mixed feelings regarding the 3rd Season. To their joy, Season 3 was better than Season 2 but still not enough. The animation got better but remained choppy in some places.
The show focused more on new characters, which are good, but it did not do that with dedication. Fight scenes that did not involve Bell were rushed. Moreover, the creators were low on budget, so some sacrifices had to be made somewhere.
Black Butler Season 2
Black Butler is an anime focused on Ciel Phantomhive. Ciel is a watchdog for the queen. The setting of the anime is Victorian-era London.
He is tasked with solving crimes related to the underworld of London. Ciel has had a contract set up with a demon named Sebastian Michaelis, who portrays himself as Ciel’s butler. The demon serves Ciel in exchange for his soul.
The First Season of Black Butler was a massive hit. It portrayed something known before in a new and innovative way. The chemistry between Ciel and Seb was very much applauded by the fans.
Undertaker, the grim reaper in Black Butler, was also a great hit among the fans. His laugh, mysterious character, and mysterious behavior intrigued the fans very much.
Another Season another disaster. There were many new characters in the Second Season that the fans could not concentrate properly on either of them.
The new characters took much of the screen time, which the fans did not like. The major characters, especially Seb and Ciel, were sidelined as if they were not the protagonists. Another major mistake was that the 2nd Season took off on its own. It did not follow the manga.
A notion that many fans do not agree with. The creators were careful for the Third Season and renewed it after four years. They followed the manga in the 3rd Season, and it was successful.
This is our list of the anime that was ruined by their sequels. Tell us what other anime you think were ruined by their sequels.
