A show’s environment can be equally significant as its characters or storyline. The setting establishes the mood and atmosphere of the narrative and almost has a personality of its own. This is undoubtedly the case with HBO’s miniseries, Sharp Objects, where the Wind Gap, Missouri backdrop is the show’s main focus.
Luckily for everyone who was a little chilly in the first episode, Wind Gap, Missouri, is a made-up town that comes from author Gillian Flynn’s imagination. Despite being from Missouri, Flynn, the novel’s author who served as the basis for the television series, utilized her knowledge of the state to create a fictitious town.
Reporter Camille Preaker played by Amy Adams, goes back to her hometown of Wind Gap at the start of the show to look into the murder of two young children.
Camille’s reluctance to go back to Wind Gap is due as much to the town’s unsettling atmosphere as it is to her controlling mother, played by Patricia Clarkson, and her enigmatic half-sister, played by Eliza Scanlen.
The Filming Locations
Barnesville, Georgia
But much of the series was filmed in Barnesville, Georgia, even though Wind Gap is a town in Missouri. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the production crew of the Sharp Objects came into the town by chance while looking for pig farms.
Even though the HBO crew momentarily took over the little village of Barnesville, the locals, and the HBO crew, appeared to have nothing but great things to say about the entire experience.
California
According to Heavy, most of the episodes of the series were filmed in California, notably in Redwood Valley, Santa Clarita, Mendocino, and Los Angeles.
Most notably, Heavy claims that Camille’s childhood house in Wind Gap is in Redwood Valley. The mansion was also highlighted in a Homes of the Rich story. Despite its beauty, Camille’s memories of the house in the series aren’t all positive.
Sharp Objects shows that even the most stunning settings can take on a new, unsettling light when paired with a brilliant team of experts. Therefore, even if the residents of Redwood Valley, California, and Barnesville, Georgia, may enjoy them, they become terrifying when placed in the fictional Wind Gap, Missouri.

There won’t be a season 2
The show will not return for a second season. Sharp Objects will not be coming back, despite being an immediate hit for the network with a 1.5 million audience at the time of release.
The show is just too dark with very dark characters and material, unlike Big Little Lies where all the stars wanted to come back, the author said of Sharp Objects. Amy is not interested in returning to this persona because it was just too much for her.
