Gran Turismo, from Sony Pictures, debuted at the box office over the past weekend, adding to the list of video game-to-movie adaptations. This motivational movie describes how Jann Mardenborough went from becoming a professional race car driver for Nissan Motorsports to becoming a Gran Turismo (GT) player based on the true tale of Mardenborough.
The Gran Turismo film from director Neill Blomkamp already makes grand claims about its inspirational plot, alluring settings, and iconic cast. Many people have seen classic flicks like Senna and Ford vs. Ferrari.
But this is the first time we hear the amazing tale of a young gamer who turned pro racer after taking first place in a video game tournament. With well-known actors like David Harbour (Jack Salter), Orlando Bloom (Danny Moore), and Archie Madekwe (Jann Mardenborough), the clip already seems interesting. Undoubtedly, a lot of people are eager for the movie’s arrival this summer.
The movie, which also stars David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, and Archie Madekwe as Mardenborough, was shot in some cool locations. The real Mardenborough served as his stunt double.
Gran Turismo Filming Locations
Surprisingly, Gran Turismo was filmed in just seven weeks, with Budapest serving as the production hub. The crew traveled the globe to shoot exciting race rings, and the production started in November 2022. The movie was finished in December 2022.
Budapest, Hungary
Budapest has developed a reputation as a center for several film projects that include thrilling sequences because of its energetic environment and adaptable surroundings.
Red Sparrow, Atomic Blonde, Spy, and The November Man are a few of the most well-known films to have been filmed here. The director was inspired to explore a new genre by his infatuation with Gran Turismo’s realism and international context. Replicating real-world settings, like transferring Nissan’s Tokyo headquarters to Budapest, was one of the hardest obstacles.
Bathurst, Australia
Filming took occurred all around the world, according to Mauro Calo, the stunt driver’s tweet. Gran Turismo was filmed in a variety of places, but Sony sadly did not provide much information about them, leaving us to speculate.
The Australian Bathurst Ring was one of the hypotheses. Australia’s historic Bathurst is known for the thrilling Mount Panorama racing track. Bathurst became a magnet for motorsport enthusiasts thanks to its difficult turns and magnificent mountain views.
The history of the Jann Mardenborough race is what leads us to suspect that certain race scenes may have been filmed here. He immediately began racing in real life on race tracks, one of which was in Australia, after winning the video game tournament.
Furthermore, he participated in a Mount Panorama Circuit at the age of just 20! The fact that the background buildings in one of the photographs from the movie sets are identical to those in Bathurst is another subtle hint.
Hungaroring, Mogyoród, Hungary
Hungaroring was one of the first places where Gran Turismo was filmed, according to a Sony Pictures revelation on social media. Filming in Hungary was specifically previously announced by Sony. Fans identified the track in the image as Hungaroring, the site of the yearly Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix, after seeing it.
Although Jann Mardeborough did compete at Hungaroring, it is unknown if that race will appear in the film. Filmmakers, however, confirmed that the scene was a cover for the Le Mans event, which was initially held in France. This is not the first time the director has altered one site to represent another. Tokyo was represented by Budapest, and Circuit de la Sarthe by Hungaroring.
Red Bull Ring, Spielberg, Austria
The place that raised the most eyebrows is saved until last. We’re referring to Austria’s fabled Red Bull Ring. It was originally built in 1969 as the Austriaring and then changed to the A1-Ring.
In 2011, the circuit reopened under the name Red Bull Ring, thanks to Red Bull’s sponsorship. You might be wondering what all the social media commotion was about. This movie, as we’ve already established, was somewhat of a secret.
So when the trailer initially debuted, one of the most memorable scenes was Jann’s run around the fabled bull sculpture. Fans were quick to identify this legendary circuit as the Red Bull Ring.
