It seems that even the charm and glitter of Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham could not prevent “Expend4bles” from having a crashing opening.
The movie “Expend4bles” faced a tough challenge at the box office this weekend as it couldn’t outperform “The Nun 2,” which is still going strong at number 1.
Despite having Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham in the cast, “Expend4bles” had a disappointing debut weekend, marking the worst opening in the action-packed franchise’s history. According to data firm Comscore’s report on Sunday, “The Nun 2” continued to dominate the box office for the third consecutive week.

Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham couldn’t rescue “Expend4ables” from a disappointing debut at the box office. The fourth installment of this action-packed franchise had its weakest opening weekend ever, according to data from Comscore’s report on Sunday. Meanwhile, “The Nun 2” continued its successful run, securing the top spot for the third consecutive week.
The film, known as “Expendables 4” and produced by Lionsgate and Millennium, only managed to earn $8.3 million, falling short of expectations for its high-budget project.
The movie featured a star-studded cast, including Stallone, Statham, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Megan Fox, and Dolph Lundgren. Notably, it had been almost a decade since the last film in the franchise, which opened with $15.8 million and eventually grossed $214 million worldwide.
In this changed cinematic landscape, “Expend4bles” narrowly took the second spot behind “The Nun 2,” a horror movie that raked in $8.4 million in its debut week. “The Nun 2” is part of Warner Bros.’s spinoff from the lucrative “Conjuring” franchise and has already grossed over $69 million, demonstrating a solid start.
Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore’s senior media analyst, noted, “While it’s a star-studded franchise, horror presents a different scenario. It appears that no matter what, if a movie can deliver a few good scares within an hour and a half or two at the theatre, it’s considered a worthy admission.”

Other movies that performed well at the box office
In the third position, “A Haunting in Venice” made $6.3 million. This movie is Kenneth Branagh’s third adaptation of an Agatha Christie tale, with previous adaptations being “Murder on the Orient Express” in 2017 and “Death on the Nile” in 2022. So far, “A Haunting in Venice” has earned a total of over $25.3 million in just two weeks.
Denzel Washington’s movie “The Equalizer 3” slipped down to the fourth position after earning $4.725 million. It has now made a total of $81.1 million in the United States over the course of four weeks.
“Barbie”, th standout film of 2023, continued its success from the summer into the fall. It remained among the top five highest-grossing films and brought in $3.2 million for the week. Overall, it has now made more than $630 million domestically in the ten weeks since its release.
In the sixth spot, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” earned $3 million, and a new release, “It Lives Inside,” debuted with $2.6 million, securing th seventh position. Meanwhile, the movie “Dumb Money,” which depicts the GameStop stock frenzy, stayed in eighth place for the second week with $2.5 million.
“Blue Beetle” dropped down to ninth position after earning $1.8 million, and “Oppenheimer” completed the top 10 with $1.6 million. Christopher Nolan’s movie Oppenheimer has now made a total of $321 million domestically.
Due to the continuous ongoing strikes by Screen Actors, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, and the Writers Guide of America, there was another slow weekend at the box office. It was the first time since February 10, 2023, that no movie had crossed the $10 million.
Paul Dergarabedian is hopeful about an exciting Ocgtiber ahead thanks to some eagerly awaited movies like “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” concert film, “The Exorcist: Believer,” and “Saw X.” He believes these releases could signal a return to the usual level of activity at the box office.
