While all kinds of horror films exist in the world, there are very few, like Lifechanger, that manage to bring true horror without cheap tricks. Directed by Justin McConnell, Lifechanger is a 2019 movie that was filmed and released in Canada.
The storyline of this one-of-a-kind horror movie centers on a shapeshifter/skinwalker sort of man named Drew, who has no choice but to kill people to get their bodies. If he fails to get a new body in time, Drew fears that he may shrivel up and die.
His boring, risky, and monotonous life is made pleasant by Julia, a woman whom he fell in love with along the way. Once he adopted a new body, Drew tried to make that person’s dreams, aspirations, families, and everything else his own. This helps him live a bit longer, but once the rotting begins, he has to shift to a new body soon.
The cast of Lifechanger consists of Lora Burke as Julia, Jack Foley plays Robert, Elitsa Bako stars in the role of Emily, and Steve Kasan plays the role of Detective Freddie. While this may be a low-budget film, the acting and storyline are way more interesting than they may initially seem.
Lifechanger Movie: What Happens In The Film?
Lifechanger begins with Drew, who’s in the body of a woman named Emily, waking up to find his old wounds surfacing again. This means he has less time before he changes back to his rotten self. He goes to Emily’s home and kills her boyfriend. A detective named Freddie arrives to investigate and ends up becoming Drew’s next victim.
As Drew goes about his normal day, which involves getting rid of old bodies, he stops to pick up some drugs, which he reveals helps slow down the progression of decay. Later that day, Drew stops by a bar, and we are introduced to the love of his life, a woman named Julia.
Although Drew knew her well, to Julia, Drew was just a detective named Freddie. They try to get intimate, but Drew’s previous injuries start to return. Just like Freddie, many other people end up becoming victims of Drew’s shapeshifting curse.
The whole cycle repeats itself, with Drew adapting the bodies of a young nurse, an older man, and, eventually, Julia’s boyfriend, Robert. Each time he adapts to a new body, he visits the bar Julia stays at and has a conversation with her.
While in the body of Robert, Drew gets much closer to Julia and spends a lot of time with her. However, the bodies start piling up, and when Drew tries to burn them down, they are found by the local police. Julia sees the bodies on the news and is surprised to see all of these were people she had met recently.
Lifechanger Movie: Ending Explained
After spending so much time with Julia, Drew feels confident enough to reveal his true self to her. He tells Julia about the way he takes people’s bodies and, along with it, adapts their whole personality and life. Julia is very confused at first, but seeing Robert/Drew so serious makes her think it could be true.
Drew reveals that when he was 12, he accidentally killed his mom, who was his only source of pure love. He was able to find a love like that again after years when he finally met Julia. He met her when he had to adopt her husband, Robert’s body.
This suggests that Robert is now long dead, and Julia is devastated. Instead of understanding what Drew is saying, she just picks up a Taser and uses it on Drew. He falls and tries to stop Julia, but instead, he ends up shifting into her body.
Drew tried to stop himself, but it was too late. He was now in Julia’s body, killing her true self, even though it was an accident. This time, he decided not to take a new body and instead let himself rot completely.
His body melts and turns into a big graphic blob of meat. The movie then shows Drew’s rebirth as he tears through the meaty cage. He comes out as a partially bald old man. Drew is surprised to see that he didn’t die.
At no point in Lifechanger would we think the ending was going to be the way it was, and that’s what makes it so intriguing. The movie doesn’t explain how Drew got ahold of these powers or curse, but it does show how it probably goes away.
Lifechanger’s ending shows Drew finally accepting his fate and allowing himself to die, only to find himself rebirthed with a body and identity that’s all his. All of those people could have been alive if Drew had chosen the lives of others over his own for once.
His selfishness was only powerless when it came to Julia, as he no longer wanted to live after what he had done to her. Whether Drew was a Skinwalker or shapeshifter, he could have been born a younger version of himself if he had made this significant decision earlier.
We can’t blame him, as we see in the film that Drew feared what he was; he didn’t know what would happen once he died, and it was the fear that drove him to do all of this. Drew will now hopefully have a normal life with the dog that always recognizes him no matter which body he is in.
Lifechanger is now available to watch on Prime Video.
