It’s been more than fifteen years since Grammy Award-winner singer-songwriter Taylor Swift and Joe Jonas called it quits, but somehow, the question keeps on popping. Especially after Taylor took home so many Moonmans from last night’s MTV Video Music Awards that Swifties just want to relive those days of thunder when Taylor Swift and Joe Jonas were together.
But why did Joe Jonas leave Taylor Swift? Or was it the other way around? These two have been up and down over the years. While the “Anti Hero” singer and the former Jonas Brothers band member made every headline of the press in 2008, their messy breakup details were put into the spotlight. So, right after Taylor needs to buy some racks to place all those VMA’s and Swifties on the hype, let’s revisit some of the most intense moments these two had.
Taylor Swift & Nick Jonas Romance
In the summer of 2008, Joe Jonas and Taylor Swift started dating, hit the red carpet, the clubs, and venues together. They were all over the place. But three months into the romance, they split. Taylor took her feelings to the recording room, opening up about it in “Forever & Always”, released a month into the split.
As for Joe, he found a rebound, in the form of Camille Belle. Which Taylor also wrote about in another song titled “Better than Revenge”. While rappers have diss tracks, well, Taylor has her heartbreak hit single tracks. And she’s banked on them, there are at least half a dozen tracks that are presumed to be dedicated to Joe Jonas.
Jump forward a couple of years, and Joe Jonas eventually started dating Sophie Turner, whom she married in July 2020, and they have a child together. Taylor even seems to have put those bad feelings on the rearview mirror when it was confirmed to the press that she even sent the couple a gift for the baby, which shows her intention of keeping things at a “cool” level. Good for them!

Why Did Joe Jonas Leave Taylor Swift?
Joe Jonas broke up with Taylor Swift in a short, swift (pun intended) w7 second phone call in October 2008, Swift was only 18 years old at that time. The reasons? Joe Jonas wanted to explore his options, and the two were growing apart. Taylor was asked by that gossip queen Ellen DeGeneres about it a little while after the breakup, a tasteless bit of daytime interview if you ask me, like most of DeGeneres’s work that goes down in history as a big “that’s none of your concern”.
In any case, many people out there still think that Joe’s brothers, Nick Jonas and Kevin Jonas, did not approve of the relationship for fear that it would damage their reputation as a wholesome, Christian band. When, in fact, Taylor and the Jonas Brothers even toured and sang together. Those are baseless rumors. The breakup left Taylor Swift heartbroken, and she went on to write numerous songs about her experience, which became some of her biggest hits.
When asked about it, Joe Jonas claims that he and Taylor are “cool now”. Well, they should be, Holding a grudge for so long is bad for you, and bad for your reputation, and you can only bank on royalties from diss tracks for a limited amount of time. Taylor has had her fair share of romances, some short, some long, some controversial. In any case, the two of them were young and weren’t as mature as they are now.
Still, that legendary breakup remains one of recent pop culture’s most heated ones, with two sides, team Swift and team Jonas, whose rivalries on those Reddit forums, the memes, and the digital pop culture behind that whirlwind of a romance remain one worthy of exploring after Taylor won all those awards at the MTV VMAs last night.
