When asked about her absence from the sequel Top Gun movie, Kelly explained that she might have been turned down from the starring role as she is not interested in undergoing the knife and in dyeing back her grey hair blonde. However, Top Gun director Joseph Kosinski has denied any such claims and explained that he simply wanted to take the film in a different direction with different characters.
Kelly McGills admitted that for the longest time, she has tried to be something that she is not, and that has ruined her life in a lot of ways. Kelly also stated that she is old and fat and looks appropriate for her age and believes that there is not what that whole scene is about. She concluded by saying that she much rather feels secure in her skin and her age than place any value in all that other stuff.

In an early interview, the actress stated that she thinks the industry is not particularly kind to women who are over 50, and she doesn’t see herself as the woman who would do Botox and get a facelift as she rather wanted to grow up to be a character actress.
