Exile In Guyville Celebrates 30th Anniversary
Liz Phair, originally named Elizabeth Clark Phair, is a two-time Grammy Award-nominated American singer-songwriter who found success early in her music career. Early is an understatement because Liz’s music career took off as soon as it began with her critically acclaimed debut album ‘Exile In Guyville’. She recorded her first few tapes under the alias Girly Sound’ and ended up signing with Matador Records to release her first album.

Produced by Liz herself and Brad Wood, a friend of hers who was also a head of a music label, ‘Exile In Guyville’ was put out in June in the year 1993, and Liz’s popularity skyrocketed. Although her style and tone of music are common now, the 90s had heard nothing like Liz’s music. Her one-of-a-kind monotonous delivery, non-pg-13 lyrics, and music that was a sort of “a hybrid of indie rock and lo-fi” set her album aside from mainstream pop.
Word traveled fast, and she quickly grew a wide fanbase who could relate to her lyrical content. Her success only grew from there as she went on to release more albums, such as Whipsmart and Liz Phair. Her most recent release was in 2021 with an album named ‘Soberish’, after a long gap of eleven years.
This year, Liz and her fans celebrate the passing of 30 years since the release of ‘Exile In Guyville’ an iconic album part of Rolling Stone’s list of the ‘500 Greatest Albums Of All Time’.
