Deadliest Catch is an American reality television series that follows the hard lives of the fishermen that go out to the Bering Sea for work. Created by Thom Beers, the show hopes to capture and depict the harsh conditions that the fishermen have to face while out in the open sea against the hard, cold winds and high, terrifying waves of the oceans.
With the intensity of the stress that those aboard the ship are put through, it only makes sense for them to relieve some of it verbally, through cursing and the use of profanities which may at times go on to becoming full-blown fights.
This has definitely given the show a reputation for not being suited for all, and though some may question if the crude language is the worst part of the show, they do not even come close to the right answer.
What is probably the worst thing about the show is also the worst and most difficult part of the crew’s job as fishermen. It is a good day if they go out into the open sea and come back with loads of crabs, but what makes it even better is if they come back alive.
At times it is the strong sea winds and the high waves that wash the deck of the ship that kills crewmates, and at times it is the equipment that may injure them, but most often than not, it is gang wars or drug overuse that ends up taking lives of the people of the sea.
What Happened to Nick McGlashan?
A permanent member of the series, Nick McGlashan had been on Deadliest Catch for seven years. The thirty-three-year-old hailed from a family of established fishermen and worked on the boat as the deck boss. He appeared in a total of seventy-eight episodes of the show, appearing first in 2013 till 2020, before his death.
News of his death was made public, and it was revealed that the deck boss had died on December 28th, 2020, because of a drug overuse that seemed accidental. It was known that Nick had trouble dealing with drugs and could not bring himself to stop their use.
At the time of his death, Nick was staying at a Holiday Inn located in Nashville, Tennessee. He was apparently in town to meet with friends and celebrate Christmas with them. His autopsy report read that Nick was found in the bathroom of the inn he was staying at. He was completely unconscious and unresponsive to the medic’s effort to revive him with the help of a defibrillator.
It was noted that paraphernalia, a drug, was also found close to his body, and the police suspected that Nick may have died due to overuse. The report mentioned that Nick died due to the “toxic effects of methamphetamine, cocaine, and fentanyl.”
His history of drug abuse had led him to the hospital in the past too. In the past, it was noted that Nick had been fired by the ship captain because of his drug addiction. After this, he put himself in a rehabilitation center that could help him with his addiction so that he could be at the place he admired the most, the sea.
It turns out that though the rehab helped him for a while, enough for him to get back to work, it was definitely not enough, as the deck boss faced a relapse soon after. Seven years on the reality show was more than enough for Nick to find himself with fans that appreciated his presence, which is why his absence on the show is so heavily felt by many.
Nick had a girlfriend named Claire Hammond, and the two had been dating for quite a few years and even had two kids together. Surely, they are the ones who went through the most after Nick’s death. His passing was tough even for his crewmates, and the Discovery Channel show even aired a two-hour-long episode in honor of his death.
The reactions of all the crewmates and the captain were recorded, and all of them seemed to have the same expression of disbelief. The members took their time to say a heartfelt goodbye to their deck boss.
Bill, the captain of the Summer Bay, suffered a lot due to his death, worrying his fellow captains and crew. The episode wrapped up with their fleet coming in a coordinated way to blow the emergency flare as a way of paying tribute in classic seamen way to a lost family member.
