Oshi no Ko Episode 1 Review
Aqua and Ruby are twin siblings who, after being reincarnated, are now following in their mother’s footsteps as idols. They spend their early years as babies having entertaining interactions, offering viewers some light-hearted moments. Despite its comedic parts, the episode has an emotional punch that will tug at viewers’ heartstrings as it tackles Japan’s idol culture, its demands and expectations, and how it impacts young women.
The episode reveals Ai’s problems as a mother while also describing her struggles as an idol. Her internalization of what she must do to win the public’s adoration and her relationship with Aqua and Ruby, which offers a unique viewpoint on the effects of stardom, is especially touching to witness.
The tenderness, love, and anguish in Oshi no Ko Episode 1 are well captured. By effectively expressing the story’s emotions, Doga Kobo’s animation studio immerses viewers in the world of anime. The painting is vibrant, colorful, and full of life, perfectly capturing the vigor of idols and young children.
Despite the episode’s overall effectiveness with humor, there are a few instances where the gags about Aqua’s former life as a “loli” and Ruby bragging about breastfeeding her movie star mother feel inappropriate and unneeded. Even though these instances are few and brief enough to not diminish the episode’s overall emotional impact, they nonetheless come off as mistakes that should have been avoided.
Oshi no Ko’s first episode provides a dramatic and moving start to the series despite these problems. It’s particularly heartbreaking in the last few minutes, which creates the framework for a later, more thorough exploration of the darker aspects of idol culture.
This anime is a must-watch for anime lovers looking to understand more about idol culture’s more challenging aspects. There will be no doubt about the viewer’s interest in Aqua, Ruby, and their mother Ai’s final fate after watching the first episode.
