Mnet’s latest male version of Girls’ Planet 999(2021) – Boys Planet (2023) aired its pilot episode on 2nd February on Mnet network. This K-pop survival show targets to create a global boys idol group of the fifth-generation by accepting entries from all around the world and not just South Korea, China or Japan taking the show to a broader, international level.
Mnet is pretty popular for coming up with innovative and interesting K-pop shows and competitions that masterfully engage the audience, garnering high ratings and rave reviews.
In Boy Planet 999, the show had thousands of male participants from all over the world after which it narrowed it down to 95 contestants chosen for the competition, creating two groups- Group K and Group G.
The contestants will be expected to participate in multiple rounds with the decision factor for eliminations in each round being votes from the audiences and the judges. Even with the usual heated and tensed environment in such reality shows, they also provide great learning and entertainment content that makes them such a hit amongst the audience.
Boys Planet is sure to stand out with its combination of reputed ‘Star Masters’ hosting the show, industry-expert panel of mentors and audience from around the world being ‘Star Creators.’ Through the fans voting for their favorite member via the official Mnet app, 9 finalists will emerge victorious at the end of the show who will form the Idol Boy group.
BOYS PLANET – Show Premise
This 5th-generation K-pop Boy group debut project, titled as Boys Planet by Mnet uses a space theme, similar to Girls Planet. In this trainee survival show entrees from all over the world have been shortlisted to 98 contestants for the program divided into the two groups- Group K and Group G are planets. Scheduled to have 12 episodes in this season Boys Planet 999 will provide a platform to the shortlisted participating trainees to perform and showcase their talents to win a position in the new global Idol group to be formed.
Including both brand new trainees and a few established ones with a fan base, the competition in Boys Planet is expectantly tough and getting increasingly heated with each elimination round. The trainees will be tested through various level-up challenges in which they will vie for the top spot that shall be granted only through viewers’ votes. The ones having the lowest vote counts get eliminated whist the surviving members move on to the next challenge.
A group of seven mentors, each a master in their respective fields, shall guide the boys in vocal/dance/rap skills to help them give their best on stage and MCs who are called the ‘Star Masters,’ hosting the show as well as acting as the medium to connect the contestants and the audience.
The hosting Star Masters consist of popular artists in the K-Pop world- Hwang Min Hyun, Sunmi, Yeo Jin Goo, Lee Minhyuk (BTOB), and Key (SHINee), while the masters council includes reputed coaches in the industry including-

Boys Planet-The Voting Process
To vote for their desired contestant member the viewer may either go to the official website of Mnet or download the Mnet plus application on their smartphone. From there they may access the official Boys Planet online platform which shall connect them to the voting page where they can also learn more about each member. In this the fan may select any nine contestants, regardless of their grouping and click submit to enter their vote.
South Korean votes constitute 50% of the votes while the global viewers’ votes make up for the remaining 50%.
BOYS PLANET Episode 10 Recap
In the 10th episode of Boys Planet we see the contestant practicing late into the night, even through exhaustion. The boys are caring towards each other even as adversaries as we can see from the ways they interact.
The third mission concluded in the 3rd episode with the remaining performances being presented. A Guerilla showcase was organized for the remaining 28 contestants in the official 3rd mission. As explained by ShiNee’s member Key, the participants were to showcase their capabilities in content creation- creating everything from the song to the choreography themselves, by channeling their passion for music and performance to present it before the panel and audience.
The musical star level test welcomed musical actors Nam Woo Joo and Jung Dong Hwa as judges in the show for the episode. Trainees who could achieve the ‘All- Star’ shall be awarded with exclusive benefits with the top-most contestant receiving a promotion opportunity at representative health and beauty stores in the country.
The episode ended with Sung Han Bin, Zhang Hao, Lee Hoe Taek, and Kim Gyu Vin grabbing the ‘All-Stars,’ with Lee Hoe Taek emerging in the highest position, winning the above mentioned benefits.
The trainees were overwhelmed with emotions as they met with the surprise of the parents being present in the audience.
