The show is based on New York Times best-selling book, The Power by Naomi Alderman, which was published in 2016. The writer also took part in the production process of the show along with Raelle Tucker and Sarah Quintrell. Most shows take the usual approach to science-fiction and dystopia in shows, but The Power comes as a breath of fresh air with its focus on being primarily on women.
The series, The Power, is about a strange natural change that occurs in the young female body that gives them the power to electrify people at their fingertips. Soon they are hit with the realization that this same Power can also be shared with other older women, leading to most women on the planet has this superpower.
The Power of electrocuting makes women’s fight for their rights much easier. The show explores exactly what would happen if, in a parallel world, women were in control while being the stronger gender.
The Power: Plotline
The Power is a show that explores the universe women in real life have been dreaming of. In a world exactly the same as ours, women suddenly find their fingertips equipped with the Power to electrocute people. It is a heredity and natural thing present only in young teenage women and eventually gets passed on to the older generation of women.
Suddenly almost all the women in the world share the superpower, and the world sets to move in a completely new direction. The show explores how first, a small group of teenagers find themselves with Power and how they learn to explore it. Throughout the episodes, the women make new discoveries related to their powers, including how to pass them on to other women.
The Power is one of the few female-cast-oriented science-fiction shows that explores the women’s perspective of the world unabashedly. The show does not shy away from addressing the fears and restrictions that a woman faces and how this Power gives them the freedom they should have had right from the start of time.
Parts of the trailer of the show explore the reversed gender stereotypes and how as women around the world reach out for their freedom with both their hands, men feel more and more threatened. The series has included how it would be if women around the world acted the same way men do, and it would make people uncomfortable.
The show is definitely a conversation starter with a much-needed commentary on women’s condition in the real world.
