A&E’s most popular TV series yet, called “Hoarders“, returns to screens this week with a much more intriguing season. Not only are the upcoming episodes going to be filled with a new set of hoarders, but we’ll also be seeing tons of new houses being provided the satisfying deep cleaning they’ve needed for a while.
First seen on American television on August 17th, 2009, Hoarders is a documentary plus reality TV show that introduces us to the lives of people suffering from Hoarding Disorder, a type of somewhat prevalent mental condition that subconsciously causes the hoarder to collect unnecessary and sometimes even dangerous things. The description may sound like it’s not a big deal, but this A&E’s Hoarders series has proven that the condition can be debilitating and can even sadly stop a person from going about their everyday life to the point that they break off family relationships.
Hoarding disorder is also often accompanied by depression and anxiety, which makes the person a complete recluse in worst-case scenarios. The show aims to help these people get back to their old lives by offering them clean as well as therapy services. Each episode begins with an introduction to the person and takes us through their everyday life. A cleaning expert is called in to help with the house, after which a psychologist is assigned to the person. Hoarders also offers to help the people who appear on the show for six months.
The program was first broadcast by A&E but was later taken up by Lifetime. It returned on A&E from the 8th season, and new installments have been released each year. We also get to see the progress of hoarders the show had featured in their previous seasons.
Hoarders: What Happened in Season 13?
The previous season of Hoarders began airing on October 18th, 2021 and featured a total of 8 different people in the course of its run. The first hoarder we were introduced to was Terri, a caretaker who was putting her personal life as well as her career at risk due to her extreme hoarding disorder. Aside from hoarding up in her house, she was also collecting stuff in the old gentleman’s house she worked at. Terri also had temper issues, so the cleaning expert and the therapist had to get about carefully through her situation.
Another unfortunate story we see is of the interior designer, Paul. After ending up with heartbreak, Paul chose to deal with his depression by collecting random things that he used to get by working as an interior designer. Now that his house was filled with clutter, he wasn’t able to live properly and meet with his family like before. Carmen had a similar story, where she dealt with the loss of her husband by hoarding. She also ended up with a neck injury, which further advanced her hoarding abilities.
Seeing her mom deep in disorder, Carmen’s daughter Melissa contacts the Hoarders team to help her mom overcome her mental issues and get back to her sweet old self. Episode 6 featured the case of Kate, a realtor who had resorted to collecting objects that she got from her job selling homes. Her own house was now too cluttered to even move around.
Now that the city was issuing Kate fines, she wanted to clean up her old ways of living and start afresh. The season ends with Martha, who, asides from having a cluttered home, also had no water facility, making her life a complete mess. Strained family relationships had prevented her from asking for help, but now that the team is ready to help her, Martha finally had hope of becoming a better person.
