As a symbolic gesture between two former rivals, Jonah, the Chancellor, talks with an envoy from the Pact who has traveled to the Burgue to purchase weaponry. The weapons are actually for The Pact and its war against New Dawn, the Fae movement we first encountered via Imogen, although this is an open secret to both sides.

Sophie pushes Jonah to enlist the Burgue in the fight to support the Pact, knowing that it will solidify their leadership positions and prevent the same dissatisfaction from spreading to the Burgue. She does, however, have a backup plan. If they are the New Dawn, they and The Pact will become embroiled in a conflict, allowing The Burgue to finally carry out its ambitions to conquer the faerie realm of Tirnanoc.
As part of her ruse, Sophie has been concealing her faun handmaid in her home’s attic to protect her from the Carnival Row slums. Sophie gives this woman meals in exchange for financial guidance and hairstyling suggestions.
Sophie talks with her friends and offers to purchase their factories because she is unsatisfied with those two plans. Sophie knows that a future conflict will necessitate a large increase in factory workers, which might result in a major financial windfall for her.
In the past, we have seen Philo intend to interrupt a feast to declare that he, and not Jonah, is the child of the previous Chancellor; in the second episode, he follows through on that plan. He tells Vignette first, who isn’t too delighted because she knows it’s probably a one-way trip for Philo. Because of his persistence in traveling, the lovers split up badly.

Tourmaline still has visions in which the deaths of the rebel commander Dahlia and his deputy Bolero are depicted. Her hands are stained with the blood of a dead squirrel when she awakens in the Haruspex witch’s home.
Mima, a spiritual authority, learns through Tourmaline that because Tourmaline was close to Haruspex when she passed away in season 1, the power trickled into her. She says that if Tourmaline embraces these powers, there’s a danger she’ll turn evil.
The Burgue and Pact ambassadors begin their dinner, and Ezra Spurnrose is one of the attendants. He still feels abandoned because his sister Imogen fled with a faun. Before telling the banquet his secret, Philo puts his plan into action. Before being fatally shot, a flying Oona covered in pus and boiling rushes at the stunned Chancellor.
