HBO amuses its viewers through its groundbreaking series, movies, and documentaries. One such show is ‘Painting with John,’ where John Lurie shares his watercolor techniques while talking about culture, arts, music, and personal life. Thus, the viewers learn a lot and get inspired by his experience.
John Lurie is a seventy years old American actor, musician, producer, director, and most importantly, a painter. Talking about production and direction, he worked as an actor, producer, and director for the TV series, Fishing with John. It was a standard fishing and travel show.
Lurie embraced painting when he started experiencing symptoms of Chronic Lyme Disease (CLD) in 2000, which distanced him from music and acting. Members thank him for providing meme material in the form of Bear Surprise, his naïve watercolor painting.
Moreover, Lurie’s artwork gets displayed in museums and galleries around the world. He never got married but has a notable dating history. According to his autobiography (The History Of Bones), various interviews, and reports, Lurie dated Lisa Stroud, Liz Ganz, Rebecca Wright, Maria Duvall, and Jill Goodwin.

Where Does John Lurie Live?
Lurie was born in Minneapolis and raised in New Orleans (in Louisiana) and Worcester (Massachusetts). After finishing schooling, he moved to Berkeley (in California) and, later, to New York City in 1974. He also lived in London for some time for his solo saxophone performance.
According to a piece in ‘The New Yorker,’ a staff writer wrote about Lurie’s disappearance from New York due to a stalker. Later, the accused stalker went on a hunger strike to prove he was not a stalker only half a block away from Lurie’s house. Lurie addressed this weird point and said that nothing changed in his life.
Afterward, Lurie lived in Palm Springs (in California) and a small Turkish village. Finally, he decided to live a peaceful life away from the noise of New York City. Thus, as of now, he lives in his comfortable Caribbean house.
Though Lurie has not disclosed his exact living spot, we can assume that his abode provides him peace to get creative for his paintings, music, and other art forms. He has adapted his house to support his passion, inspiring him to have a home studio. The show makers wanted to keep the show as authentic and private as possible. Thus, John Lurie’s property is the best filming spot. Moreover, he is the writer, creator, and director of the show.
The Caribbean is known for its jaw-dropping features such as rich culture, islands, cities, towns, natural beauty, and tropical nature. Besides ‘Painting with John,’ other production teams have chosen the same place for filming due to the same reason.
Painting With John At His House
The ‘Painting with John’ crew members filmed the first two seasons at his home, and the third season is going on. You will get the pieces of evidence in the upcoming episode (sixth episode) titled ‘The Night Hunters,’ aired on 7 July 2023.
Some people on Reddit have guessed his house to be in Grenada, the Southeastern part of the Caribbean Sea, looking at the scenery in his picture shared on the internet. Lurie is such a private person that only a handful of people have his contact number, according to an article written on him. Thus, people can only guess his exact location as of now.
Lurie worked for his fishing show, Fishing with John, thirty years ago, and nothing has motivated him to start with his painting show. It happened accidentally. He had a painting technique but knew he would forget it after going to New York. Thus, he got it filmed by his friend.
Lurie’s friend uploaded it on Instagram and his website. Erik Mockus continued filming Lurie’s paintings. Mat Dwyer, who conducted a podcast with Lurie, asked him if he could send the painting videos to Adam McKay. Mckay sent it to HBO, which gave rise to ‘Painting with John.’
Lurie does not get interrupted by the crew members because he paints with his soul. However, in an interview, he confessed to ‘Variety’ that he has made worse paintings (if you have seen his paintings), and only six or seven from the next batch were better.
