Webtoon writer and creator Jang Yi’s series titled Uncanny Counter was turned into a South Korean series that lasted for two seasons. While fans showed much love to the series, there are still a few who do not know that the series is actually based on a webtoon. If you are one of them, then let us tell you more about the webtoon Uncanny Counter along with its ending.
The webtoon, also known as Amazing Rumor, is a gripping tale that has it all, from action to mystery to creatures too fantastical to exist in the real world. The story tells us that while the world is full of both good and bad, there is powerful evil in the afterlife as well.
Evil spirits from the other world continuously try to prey on innocent mortal humans in hopes of escaping their never-ending afterlife. Thankfully, there is a noodle-shop place that can protect humans from such spirits. They are called the ‘Counters,’ and they obviously possess supernatural strength.
Our story starts with the death of one of the counters, which leads to an aloof high schooler being chosen to fill their place. The main lead, So Mun boring life, flips and changes drastically, also causing his body to physically change. Turns out he has a knack for the job, and it will not be all that difficult for him to go around catching spirits.
This webtoon was turned into a series that released its first part in 2020, and the second part aired recently in 2023, making the show the highest-rated series on OCN Network till now. The series has actors Jo Byeong Kyu, Yoo Jun Sung, Kim Se Jeong, Yeom Hye Ran, Ahn Suk Hwan, Yoo In Soo, and many others that made the show an entertaining watch.
Uncanny Counter Webtoon Ending Explained
If you have read the webtoon and watched the show, you would know that the series actually follows the story of the webtoon quite perfectly right up to the climax of season one. While the webtoon has already ended, the show has to continue, and it seems like the creators have introduced more storylines and characters for the second season.
As the end of the webtoon approached, So Mun, our main lead fully became a part of the team with powers and skills completely developed. He and the team manage to stop our bad guy, Shin Myeong Hwi, and the evil soul that possessed him to Yung, where he would face judgment for all the bad he did.
Yung is that realm where apparently all souls roam free. It is a sort of boundary between the afterlife and the world of the mortals. In the end, So Mun enters this realm and finally gets to see his dead parents. He meets them one last time, bids his goodbye, and his parents finally rest in peace knowing that their son is safe, healthy, and loved.
One of the Counters, Ga Mo Tak, helps the police investigate and find evidence against Shin Myeong Hwi and his evil doings. And it is by this time the Mayor also becomes conscious, leading to his arrest. So Mun’s grandparents, who had been wrongfully killed without any warning, were also put in the Yung realm with the help of Ha Na, who transported them there at So Mun’s request.
In their dreamlike state, they cry over their untimely death till they feel better and get closure. The webtoon ends with the Yung realm on the lookout for more Counters who could help the existing ones look after and patrol the entire country for devil spirits.
While everything seems to wrap up nicely with the Counter getting back to doing their jobs after going through so much, the webtoon creator, Jang Yi, managed to add a little surprise in the epilogue for fans. We see that a new evil seems to have been born somewhere, not in the quiet on the Counter’s radar.
The Cliffhanger End
Somewhere in a prison, a prison guard yells for his life. As other guards run to check what is happening, we are told that the cell where the chaos has unfolded has an inmate named Ma Ju Seok. Another guard’s voice chimes in as he while trying to catch his breath, says that he saw somebody “kill them all.”
In the last scene, we find just one inmate, possibly Ma Ju Seok, standing among a pool of dead bodies, exuding rage and a chilling aura just from his stance. We move closer to his murderous eyes and notice that he has a rainbow-colored halo surrounding him and bright blood dripping from his angry eyes.
The webtoon makers end their writing right at this point, leaving fans wondering as to who could the inmate be and just what he wanted. This takes us back to the introductory lines of the webtoon, which opens with the words, “In this world and the next, both good and evil exist.”
With their cliffhanger ending, could the makers have implied that no matter how much you fight, evil will continue to persist the same way as well does? Even if they had introduced this character and created a story around him, the good would have fought this evil and probably won again, only for another evil to rise again.
This is the circle of life, and though fans have a lot of theories themselves, you can stream season two of the show to get the satisfaction of watching a close end.
