There are reality shows, and there are horror series. Combine those two, and you get Zombieverse, a structured reality show that follows a plot but still has many elements that a normal reality show would have.
After COVID, We’re all pretty much used to the idea of a virus coming out of nowhere and spreading rapidly. This is where Zombieverse comes in, instead, with an actual zombie virus. The scary apocalypse begins, and contestants have to work as a group to ensure they last until the end of the challenge.
No one’s as well versed with zombies as South Korea, so the zombies’ characteristics are realistic and believable. What do they get after surviving the apocalypse? We’re not sure, but whatever it is, it would definitely be something better than being a zombie that’s abandoned by their friends.
Zombieverse: What Happened in Season 1?
The first season of Zombieverse began with a total of 10 contestants. What they didn’t see coming was a whole zombie apocalypse heading their way. As soon as the zombie virus started spreading, the survival challenge officially began, and the contestants had to fend for themselves.
The cast of the first season of Zombieverse consisted of:
- Lee Si Young
- Noh Hong Chul
- Park Na Rae
- DinDin
- Fukutomi Tsuki
- Yoo Hee Kwan
- Jonathan
- Patricia
- Hong Seong Woo
- Dex
When the competition began, these ten people decided to work together and had to go through several tasks to secure meals, safe places, and modes of transportation for themselves. The rules of the first season of Zombeiverse suggested that those who got bit by a zombie would turn into zombies themselves and get eliminated.
By the last few episodes, the ones to turn into zombies were Hong Seong Woo, Jonathan, Yoo Hee Kwan, Park Na Rae, and Noh Hong Chul. It was Na Rae and Seong Woo who had lasted until the final episode but unfortunately turned into zombies as the virus inside their body spread.
Hong Seong Woo and Na Rae allowed the others to reach the coordinates safely, but they held Hong Chul back, as he was undeserving of staying alive. Throughout the show, Hong Chul tries to put others in danger just to save himself. When Si Young, DinDin, Tsuki, Patricia, and Dex reach the coordinates, they see that a “rescue” boat has arrived.
Tsuki and DinDin get on it and abandon the others on land. In a surprising twist, we see that the boat was never what Kim Sal-man had guided them to. It was a bus that could float on water. Si Young, Dex, and Patricia get on it and become the true survivors. Tsuki and DinDin also manage to survive, but they have to continue living as fishermen.
Zombieverse Season 2: All You Need To Know
As the first season was coming to an end, we saw that Hong Chul was still conscious, though not as a human. He seemed to have kept his ability to think despite being transformed into a zombie by Na Rae. As cunning as he was, Hong Chul managed to survive in his own style. The way the episode ended with him is an indication that there’s more to come from this thrilling Zombieverse.
Since it’s been only a few weeks since the first season of Zombieverse was aired, it’s highly unlikely that we may see a new season anytime soon. If Zombieverse season 1 manages to gather a lot of positive reviews and popularity, we could see work for a new season begin this year, with Zombieverse season 2 premiering sometime by 2024 or 2025.
The thrilling challenges, humorous interactions, and drama associated with this zombie survival show have certainly attracted many, and most of the viewers are hoping that there’s more to come from this unique Netflix reality series.
We could also see Hong Chul be a part of the second season, as he’s the only one left in Seoul now. At present, there’s no confirmation regarding a second season, but knowing Netflix, if Zombieverse season 1 becomes a hit, season 2 will soon follow.
Both the current and future seasons of Zombieverse will be available to watch on Netflix.
