Monkey D. Luffy, a young fellow composed of rubber which is the main character in the series, sets out from the East Blue Sea in search of the legendary bounty known as the One Piece in order to establish himself as the King of the Pirates.

He is motivated by his hero, the ruthless pirate Red-Haired Shanks. Luffy saves and recruits a pirate fighter and combatant called Roronoa Zoro in an endeavor to form his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, and the two of them go out in pursuit of the eponymous prize.

Later in the episodes, additional characters join Luffy and his team as they embark on their excursions. These include Tony Tony Chopper, a similar to humans reindeer doctor; Nico Robin, a research scientist and recently departed executioner for the Baroque Works; Franky, a giant robot-like shipwright; Brook, a bone-y musician and martial artist; and Jimbei, a carp crew member and senior head of the Seven Warlords of the Sea. Franky constructs the Straw Hat Pirates a new carrier, the Thousand Sunny, when the Going Merry is irreparably wrecked.

While sailing the seas in search of their goals, they come into contact with some other pirates, hitmen, criminal groups, rebels, undercover agents, and troops of the tyrannical World Government, as well as a variety of other friends and opponents.

Why Luffy is called Ruffy? Meaning Explained and the Confusion Cleared

The reason for this Luffy and Ruffy confusion is as quirky as him, and some fans even wrote that they are the biggest fan of the anime but never heard about the name Ruffy being used to refer to Luffy. As this is not a bad thing because, officially, the name of the character is Luffy, as stated by the writer himself numerous times in interviews.

There is no official news about this Ruffy thing, but there have been two theories surfacing currently regarding how this name came into existence. The first of the two is that people who watched the episodes with german subtitles showed Luffy as Ruffy, as the letters ‘r’ and ‘l’ are often exchangeable.

π— π—Όπ—»π—Έπ—²π˜† 𝗗 π—Ÿπ˜‚π—³π—³π˜†

For example, even Rorona Zoro’s name was changed to Lolona Zolo sometimes in the German subtitles, and when they started talking about it, online, others got to know about it too. However, this sounds about right. There is another explanation which some people thinks is the best explanation for this when compared to the other ones.

The other one is that there are no “l” in Japanese, so if it’s written in Japanese, it’s always going to be “Ruffy”, but officially it’s “Luffy,” and whenever it’s spelled in English, that’s what it will be spelled as.

“Ruffy” is just an unfortunate result of the lack of an “l” in the Japanese writing system as well as the difficulty for Japanese people to pronounce said letter. This is why you often hear “Ruffy,” even in the anime itself. For example, Franky’s voice actor struggles with the L and always says Ruffy.
