UK’s most eccentric presenter yet, Noel Edmunds, has faced criticism quite a handful of times in his four-decade-long career. He has not only kept the audience entertained as a presenter but also as an unconventional persona that gets weirder as days pass.
The Essex-born DJ first worked as an art teacher and later turned his focus towards a radio career. He started working at Radio Luxembourg and then moved to BBC Radio 1 a year later in 1969. Although it was his first big gig in the radio world, he would only step in for other DJs when needed. After a few years, Edmunds made his way onto the Breakfast Show in 1973 and worked as a host for the radio show until 1978. He left the world of radio to work as a TV presenter.
The first ever program Noel ever hosted was Top Of The Pops in the year 1972. He also became one of the presenters for Top Gear and The Late Late Breakfast Show. Edmunds’s time on this BBC program had been anything but great as one of the other presenters, Michael Lush, died while preparing for a live stunt. Other programs that Noel Edmunds has hosted include Noel’s House Party and the infamous game show Deal or No Deal. Despite his successful career as a presenter, Edmunds eventually chose to leave it all behind for a slow-paced life and became spiritual.
Noel Edmunds: Times When The DJ Turned TV Host Made Headlines
Back in the 1990s, Noel had come up with Mr. Blobby theme parks at Somerset and Lowestoft. Though the parks did manage to attract visitors in the first few months of its opening, they were soon found to be empty most of the time due to the decline in visitor numbers. Edmunds blamed the Lancaster City Council for their poor management of the parks, and he ended up losing around £2.5 million on the theme parks.
Later in the year 2014, Edmunds declared that he was going to buy BBC since the existing corporation was not living up to anyone’s expectations and would soon face its destruction if things kept going the same way. Four years later, Noel was back in the news after he had been cast as one of the contestants on “I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!”. He had high hopes of winning the game show but was unfortunately voted out on the first day of elimination. It later was revealed that he was the highest-paid contestant to have ever been on the survival show.
The TV presenter attracted much criticism after he tweeted the benefits of an EMP Pad and claimed it would even cure cancer. His response towards a man suffering from cancer was not quite right, as he suggested the man’s cancer was due to his negative attitude. When Noel was invited to This Morning, hosted by Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, he revealed that he was the victim of prostate cancer and reiterated the importance of EMP Pads.
What Happened To Noel Edmunds?
With him discovering more about spiritualism, Noel has shifted to a much quieter place with his wife, Liz Davies. They had met each other on the sets of Deal or No Deal, where Liz used to work as a makeup artist. She soon became his third wife after they married in July 2009. The couple had visited New Zealand previously and had fallen in love with the place. He claimed he felt an attraction to the place that just made him want to change countries.
Now that he stays in Matakana, Noel has been maintaining a low-key presence. When the world was dealing with the pandemic, Edmunds had come up with a radio station for healthy plants called “Positivity Radio.” The station would broadcast positive messages for plants, which Noel claimed was proven to be beneficial through tests.
He later made new stations that would broadcast positive messages for pets. When the local media started paying attention to his new line of work, he announced that he was only trying to promote the country and would not go back to his old Radio station DJ self anytime soon. As for ITV’s new announcement regarding Deal or No Deal‘s return, it looks like Noel Edmunds won’t be the host this time around and will be replaced by Stephen Mulhern.
