From Shaquille to Shaq

Shaq Episode 4 will show the journey from Shaq to Shaquille. The famed basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal‘s 19-year career and personal life are followed in the documentary series SHAQ. The four-part documentary follows Shaq’s rise from his early years following his selection by the Orlando Magic as the very first pick overall in the 1992 NBA Draft to his climb and popularity as a four-time NBA champion and one of the finest centers of all time.

We also learn the answers to some pressing questions about Shaq’s life, including what it was like for him as a rookie with the Orlando Magic, what it was like for him later in his career when he played for the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat, and about the infamous Shaq-Kobe feud, despite the two of them sharing the Lakers from 1996 to 2004.

Shaq Previous Episode Recap

Before diving into Shaq Episode 4, let’s quickly do a recap of the previous Episode. The four-hour HBO documentary on the iconic basketball player has some insightful moments, but it also contributes to the habit of making every sports icon into a cultural icon.

The Fall

Former NBA official Bob Delaney had the most insightful observations about O’Neal’s play on the court. The parade of 7-foot stiffs that hung around the league just so they could give Shaq six penalties and how difficult it was for O’Neal to officiate are also topics he discusses openly.

We never got the impression that O’Neal was a particularly great basketball player, not even after extended interviews with  Jerry West, Jackson, and Pat Riley. His low post footwork alone could have been a whole episode, and it would have also paid off the third episode’s revelation of the big toe injury that ultimately brought the big fella down.

Usually, when an athlete is this deeply involved in the production of his sports documentary, the off-limits topics stay off-limits. However, O’Neal explores the majority of his unpleasant aspects, including his remorse over two divorces, his ongoing grief over the passing of his younger sister and Kobe Bryant, and his reconnection with his biological father. You can’t help but wish Alexander had focused his documentary series on DJing when you hear O’Neal discuss how it has replaced the rush he gets from performing in front of enormous crowds. DJing is his most recent passion project.

At his peak, O’Neal was the best center of his time; at his worst, he was the biggest letdown. O’Neal did not lead to a significant cultural shift, did not champion civil rights, and did not give up his prime years to further a political cause. He was a huge boy who became an even bigger man who ruled the court as long as his bones bonded and his intellect took over the rest. That hardly qualifies as content for a four-hour documentary. Who, though, is going to challenge the biggest man in the room? Now we will discuss when will Episode 4 of Shaq will release and what will happen in it.
