Death Of Lord Mountbatten: What Happened?
It was on 27 August 1979 when Lord Mountbatten died after an explosion occurred on his boat. He was then 79 years old.
At that time, Lord Mountbatten often used Classiebawn Castle in County Sligo, Ireland. To be more precise, it is located at a distance of 12 miles from the border with Northern Ireland. So, it’s not that far.
On 27 August, Lord Mountbatten decided to go out lobster fishing. He loved to do that. So, he planned up with some of his family members and was out for the same, on a boat. Talking specifically about the boat, it was 29 feet and was named the Shadow V.
At exactly 11:45 a.m, the Provisional IRA team thought to activate the bomb on his boat. Eventually, Lord Mountbatten, his grandson, Nicholas, and the 15-year-old friend, Paul Maxwell (he worked on the boat) died. On the very next day, Lord Doreen Bradbourne passed away too. Why? Because of the injuries caused by the explosion.
There was a witness too. The person shared the scene and ended up saying, “The boat was there one minute and the next minute it was like a lot of matchsticks floating on the water.”
Knowing about his death, people have been wondering why was he even targeted. You will be surprised to know that Lord Mountbatten was targeted from the beginning of the 1960s. It was not the first time though. Even before August 1979, the IRA team attempted to assassin him several times. Lord Mountbatten never thought himself to be the target of the terrorist.
Talking more about it, Thomas McMohan was also sentenced to jail for the same. In case you are wondering, Thomas was considered one of the most experienced bomb creators of the IRA team. After being imprisoned for 19 years, he was released in 1998.
