The fifth episode of Domina Season 2 focuses on the power struggles and machinations of Livia as she tries to secure her sons’ futures. With Augustus away at war in Germany with Drusus and Tiberius, Livia sees an opportunity to get a hold of Augustus’ will and testament.
She wants to understand what provisions Augustus made for the future of the empire after his death. Livia tasks her allies Tycho and Portia with trapping a priestess to steal Augustus’ will from the high temple.
When Livia reads the will, she is horrified to find that Augustus intends to name his adopted sons, Agrippa’s children, as his heirs. This completely goes against Livia’s plans to have her own son Drusus succeed Augustus. The will confirms Livia’s suspicion that Augustus never intended to give power to her children due to their bloodline.
Meanwhile, the priestess Livia, trapped, confesses to the high priestess Turia about stealing the will. Turia has a long-standing rivalry with Livia and uses this opportunity for revenge. She blackmails Livia into signing over all her properties in exchange for Turia’s silence.
Livia agrees but then has Turia kidnapped and left to die in a remote cave. This demonstrates how far Livia is willing to go to remove obstacles in her path.
With Turia disposed of, Livia changes Augustus’ will to name Drusus as his successor. She still needs to deal with Agrippa, Augustus’ closest ally, who supports adopting Agrippa’s sons.
Livia begins manipulating Agrippa through seduction and having his own will stolen. The episode ends with Livia determined to make the necessary moves to put her son Drusus on the path to becoming Augustus’ heir.
In this episode, Livia shows she is willing to use honey traps, theft, murder, and manipulation to secure power for her bloodline. Her ruthless ambition drives the plot as she outmaneuvers rivals like Turia and tries to stack the deck in Drusus’ favor. However, her schemes contain risks that could backfire.
The writers have taken liberties with historical accuracy to focus on dramatizing Livia’s unrelenting quest for dynastic power at all costs. While these plot points strain credulity at times, Domina continues to center on Livia’s complex and multifaceted characterization.
