Soulmate 2023: Plot Summary
Soulmate, the South Korean movie inspired by the Chinese movie of the same name, opens up with a female protagonist Mi-So visiting an art gallery to see a picture of herself from her childhood. The manager there asks Mi-So if she knows the one who created the artwork.
She denies knowing the location of the person, and as advised by the manager, when she arrives home, Mi So starts reading the blogs of the creator of the art, Ha Eun. Scene cuts, and we see Ha Eun and Mi So during their childhood. Like every iconic friendship, even the friendship of these characters is very special. Ha Eun is an introverted girl, while Mi So is outgoing.
Both find each other at the age of 13, and since then, it nearly becomes difficult for them to spend time without each other. They share great memories, which they believe they will relish for the rest of their lives.
Soulmate portrays the various stages of friendship with both good and bad times. But for Ha Eun and Mi So, things only get worsen day by day, probably because of the existence of one person in their lives, Jin Woo.
When Ha Eun and Mi So grow up and finally decide to thrive in their careers, they have to make the toughest decision to join different universities, even though they both want to join the art college.
In the college, Ha Eun falls for a guy named Jin Woo, who ultimately falls in love with her as well. Soon, Ha Eun, Jin Woo, and Mi So begin hanging out with each other, which brings Jin Woo and Mi So close. At first, it is very unclear if Ha Eun smells something wrong about their relationship with each other, but when she sees Jin Woo’s necklace around Mi So’s neck, she starts realizing that they like each other.
However, Ha Eun wants her friendship and relationship more than anything else, so she decides not to be vocal about it, just to see herself ruining everything she is grateful for in her life. Days pass by; Mi So writes Ha Eun letters about how she is traveling around and enjoying her life, which she is not. She is spending days hardly earning any money in Seoul but to keep Ha Eun happy, she tells her that she is traveling the world.
On the other hand, even Jin Woo decides to arrive in Seoul, which Ha Eun finds a bit fishy because she thinks that Jin Woo and Mi So still have feelings for each other. When both Mi So and Jin Woo are in Seoul, Ha Eun feels alone as both her best friend and her love are away from her. However, she stays strong for both of them. Mi So again makes her way to Jeju Island to meet Ha Eun; both go on a trip where Ha Eun finds Jin Woo’s necklace in Mi So’s bag.

Jin Woo and Ha Eun begin living together, and while everything is going on perfectly in their lives, on the day of their marriage Ha Eun decides to step back. When Ha Eun discusses her marriage day with her mother, she assures her that she can take as much time as she wants to get married and finally settle down. Ha Eun moves to Seoul and lives in the apartment where her friend, Mi So, used to live.
Soon we see Ha Eun making the same painting that we see at the beginning of the film. Two years go by, Mi So and Jin Woo meet again, and this time, Mi So has Ha Eun’s daughter with her.
When Jin Woo asks about Ha Eun, Mi So tells him that Ha Eun is pregnant with his child, and when the baby gets delivered, she decides to leave her with Mi So to complete her dream of traveling the world. However, this is not how Soulmate ends. Ha Eun, who was pregnant with Jin Woo’s child, died while delivering the baby because of blood loss.
So, Mi So decides to take care of her child, and the reason why she does not say anything about it to Jin Woo is because he needs closure. So the story that she told him seemed perfect for her without making him feel guilty about her death.
After Ha Eun’s death, her mother sends Mi So to the place where she lived in Seoul. There she sees the painting of her which Ha Eun was making. The painting is incomplete, so Mi So completes the painting and arranges to put it up on the wall of the art gallery, ultimately completing Ha Eun’s dream of becoming a prominent artist.
Additionally, in the beginning, a manager tells Mi So that Ha Eun is posting blogs on the internet. As Ha Eun is dead, it is Mi So who is writing those blogs in place of her friend as she wants to keep her alive for others. After her death, Mi So finds this way to cherish all her memories, and this is how the South Korean film of 2023, Soulmate ends.
