It was a love story that ended terribly when their scheme to depose the dictatorial king was discovered. Roderick was imprisoned and killed, but the queen was made to wed the king she had been trying to depose. She had to act as though she was loyal to him while secretly working to bring him down.

During this time, Ferdinand goes to Millaria. He notices her odd carryout and gets the impression that she is hiding something from him. She pulls him away as he tries to approach her. Because of the hurtful rejection, Ferdinand accuses her of being cold-hearted and self-centered. He hears her tell him she doesn’t care about him.

Then he claims to know Millaria’s darkest secret: a princess has deposed the true queen in her stead. His discovery completely amazes and terrifies Millaria. The princess questions his method of discovery and his intended use of the information.

When Millaria learns of his plan, she explodes and dismisses him, calling him obnoxious and self-centered. She affirms her resolve to follow Queen Gloria’s orders no matter the cost of her life. But Ferdinand doesn’t seem to care. Although he admires Millaria’s strength and resolve, he thinks she is naive.

Ferdinand claimed that Queen Gloria wasn’t the saint that everyone thought she was. He believes she cheated on Roderick and even played a role in her husband’s demise. In a letter Roderick wrote to the queen right before his execution, he claims that he has evidence supporting his claims. Millaria is left stunned and confused.

Ferdinand says he won’t send her the letter unless she agrees to his terms. Therefore, he refuses to do so. He gives her some time to think about the offer before threatening to share her secret if she makes a hasty decision. At the end of the chapter, Millaria leaves in a condition of inner struggle.

Roderick keeps sending her strange letters, and she is helpless to do anything to get out of this dangerous situation. She is confused about whether to believe Ferdinand when he says he will or hold suspicions that he may lie to her.
