With the House of the Dragon Episode 5 ending, fans are curious to know why Prince Daemon is unfit to rule the 7 kingdoms. We know that when this show kickstarted, he was the heir to the Iron Throne after King Viserys’ reign. Although, we saw that after the death of Queen Aemma and their son who was only alive for a few minutes, the King decided to name Princess Rhaenyra as his heir. Although, why did he make this choice even though he had a perfectly fine brother? Here, we shall discuss just that.
Since day 1, we have seen that Daemon wants to do nothing but create a nuisance. He is a true Targaryen who is selfish and revengeful. Although, he does want to make a name for himself and seek the attention of his brother. In episode 1, we saw him sitting on the Iron Throne when he came to the Red Keep for the royal tourney.
Then we saw him making more trouble and destroying the peace of the king as he stole a dragon’s egg and declared to be wedded to one of the women he took from a brothel in King’s Landing. He sent a letter stating that he shall marry the woman and as she births their child, he or she will be brought up with a dragon’s egg. Although, it was Rhaenyra who was able to get Daemon to yield.
About Prince Daemon’s Past
After that, Daemon got into a partnership with House Velaryon and started a battle at the Triarchy. This was called the Battle of Stepstones which went on for years. It happened between Lord Corlys and Darmon against the Crabfeeder. Daemon emerged triumphant as he put everything to risk and jumped into the crabfeeder’s den.
After this, he came to the Red Keep on his dragon and bent the knee before his brother, King Viserys. This made everyone feel like the Prince is a changed man now who cares about his brother. Well, we all know what went down after that as the Prince practically seduced Princess Rhaenyra in order to get to the throne himself. This was incest in the King’s eyes and he was banished once again from King’s Landing. Now, you might have already had a gist of what we are about to conclude next, but still, here is a breakdown of why Prince Daemon is unfit to rule the 7 kingdoms.
Why is Prince Daemon Unfit To Rule the 7 Kingdoms?
Prince Daemon is disloyal, untrustworthy, and selfish with just a hint of humanity in him. These qualities make him highly unfit for the Iron Throne. He makes decisions in a split second and does not thinks of the consequences. He might be fit to be a member of the small council or a fighter or a sworn shield, but not the ruler himself.
As King Viserys constantly reminds Rhaenyra throughout the episodes of House of the Dragon, the ruler will have to give up their own wishes in order to think for the realm. He also knows that his brother is a bad choice for the throne because he will always put his desires first without thinking of Westeros even for a second.
Recently, Paddy Considine, the actor who reprises the role of King Viserys in the series, disclosed a lot about his feelings for his character’s younger brother. Paddy says that Daemon is unpredictable and no one knows what is going on inside his head. He is childish, or more like an addict because no one knows what he is going to do next.
Even though the King has been kind enough towards his brother throughout all these 5 episodes, even after he practically used his daughter to get to the throne the King let him sit in the royal feast for jer wedding nuptials. This love will never overpower the king because he knows what is best for the people he rules and he can never do them wrong by putting Daemon in charge. As for Rhaenyra, she is young and can be molded into a Queen. She also has a sense of responsibility because she did not run away with Ser Criston however much she wanted to.
