Anime based on video games have carved a niche for itself in recent years. A lot of popular anime based on video games have become super hits among both anime lovers as well as video game enthusiasts. It is quite a different experience seeing your favorite video game characters in a TV series with a story and personality of their own.
Most of the time, the anime adaptations of a video game become more loved than the video game itself. The game NieR: Automata is developed by Platinum Games, and the publisher is Square Enix. The production of the anime adaptation of the game is done by A-1 Pictures.
Directed by Ryouji Masuyama, the anime adaptation was announced on the 5th anniversary of Nier: Automata. The character design of the anime is done by Jun Nakai. Since the anime is only going to be released, here’s a synopsis of the story for those who haven’t played the video game.
The story takes place in the future, in the year 5012. Earth is invaded by extra-terrestrials and their creation, the Machine Lifeforms. The aliens and the Machine Lifeforms brought humankind to the verge of dying out completely as a race.
Those who survived the alien apocalypse sought refuge on the moon and created an army of android soldiers which they sent back to Earth to take revenge against the aliens and recapture the Earth. Unfortunately, the war came to a standstill as the Machine Lifeforms began multiplying uncontrollably.
In response to this, the humans on the moon dispatched another fleet of android soldiers and among them was an android soldier named 2B who pairs up with 9S, another android soldier created for investigative purposes. The story revolves around these two soldiers and many mysterious events happening around them.
