Queen of Oz is BBC One’s dramedy about a party-hardy Royal Family member (a fictitious one) in her late forties. Played by Catherine Tate, she’s a borderline, dysfunctional alcoholic woman who never cared about the civic duties inherent to Royal life, she’s irresponsible, and reckless and is the constant object of tabloid stories. So, when a public relations crisis hits the Crown, the King is forced to abdicate in her favor.
As a result, Tate’s character is crowned Queen, and with little-to-no sense of what she’s doing, and aided by a bunch of utterly incompetent aides, she must now assume the position, bear the Crown and start embarking on her reign, giving way for very hilarious situations, gaffes and dramatic confrontations between her, politicians and staff.
Queen of Oz Episode 1 Recap
Queen of Oz’s debut episode presents us with Princess and soon-to-be Queen Georgiana. She’s a woman with severe personal issues, she drinks a lot, is constantly involved in scandals and cares very little about doing her work for the Royal Family. She constantly makes a fool out of herself in public and is the evident black sheep of the family.
In the context of a midlife crisis, she shirks her responsibilities to spend lots of her stipend in lavish resorts, exhibits herself, and that’s a constant public relations problem for the Royal Family’s PR team. But the moment the King is involved in a scandal, he has to decide what to do. And seemingly out of nowhere, Georgiana’s dad decides to give up the throne and pass her the Crown.
When she’s informed, she says she has nothing to do with it. But the circumstances force her to accept the Crown. And the moment she does, it’s a perfect recipe for disaster. Georgiana is privy to protocol, but she usually does whatever she wants. So, to help her adapt to the role, a rather incompetent group of aides go in for her help. But as it turns out, the aides are way more incompetent than her.
