Angaleena Presley was born in Glasgow, Kentucky, on July 28, 1974. Her father worked as a miner, while her mother was a housewife. She is the eldest of two sisters. Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Hank Williams Her Jr., and other country performers influenced Presley’s music. She is one of the members of the Pistol Annies, an all-female country trio.
Pistol Annies is a mystical, musical force that combines perfect harmonies with flawless composition and an authentically feminine point of view that veers from vulnerable and sad to pissed off and powerful within the same song. She’s also the type of country singer-songwriter who will make you reconsider your assumptions about rural America.
She values music, unvarnished honesty, and the freedom to be yourself. Wrangled discography provides access to a new form of country music: textured, psychedelic, frozen in a time zone, calm, but also punk. Angaleena refers to this as an “F-you record,” and it absolutely is. She knew that this will either make her records soar high in the charts and allow her to fly or will be harshly criticized. It’s a unique record in terms of both sound production and topic. Yet, it remains firmly a country genre.
Wrangled is truly about Angaleena unburdening her soul about her failed dreams from her time in the music industry and beyond. “Dreams Don’t Come True,” composed with her fellow Pistol Annies, establishes the baseline for how the normal human experience is typically summarized as dreaming big while you’re young and settling with less when you’re old.
Early life and Struggles
Nonetheless, Presley was an angsty teenager in the 1990s, snatching her father’s flannel clothing during her grunge phase. Her father taught her how to play “Mama Tried” by Merle Haggard on his guitar when she was 15 years old. Presley was the first in her family to migrate after studying psychology and women’s studies at Eastern Kentucky University.
She then relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, to seek a country music career. She spent several years of her struggling songwriting career in Nashville attempting to pitch her own songs to hitmakers. She created a raw, collagist aesthetic while experimenting with the rhythmic possibilities of light flicks and frying-pan noises, self-taught in the basics of her home recording. After struggling for nine months, she finally landed a publishing deal.
Big Break
Angaleena got her big break in 2011 when he joined the country music duo Pistol Annies. The Recording Industry Association of America certified the group’s debut album Hell on Heel, platinum. Presley released her debut solo album, American Middle Class, in 2014. The debut song from the album, “Ain’t No Queen,” peaked at No. 54 on Billboard’s Country Airplay list.
