Plot Of The Movie
To demonstrate their military prowess and persuade Turkey, a neutral country, to join them, the Axis powers plot an attack on the island of Keros in 1943, where 2,000 British soldiers are marooned.
Two enormous radar-directed large-calibre weapons on the adjacent Navarone Island prohibit the Royal Navy from performing a rescue. After unsuccessful attempts at aerial bombing, Allied Intelligence assembles a commando force to get into Navarone and take out the weapons.
Major Roy Franklin is the team’s leader. The other members are Major Miller’s best friend Corporal Miller, an explosives expert and former chemistry teacher, Colonel Andrea Stavrou, a member of the defeated Greek Army, Greco-American Spyros Pappadimos, a native of Navarone, and “Butcher” Brown.
They go across the Aegean Sea while posing as Greek fishermen on a dilapidated fishing boat. There, they successfully overpower the crew of a German patrol boat that was trying to catch them.
Because Mallory unintentionally caused Stavrou’s wife and children to die, Stavrou had sworn to murder him after the battle, Mallory confides to Franklin later in the voyage. Mallory, an accomplished mountaineer, guides the group on a trek up the cliff after the crew experiences a shipwreck off the coast of Navarone during a storm. Franklin suffers a serious leg injury during this ascent.
Mallory prevents Franklin from killing himself as they are hiding out in the mountains, telling him that their mission is simply a distraction and that a significant naval assault will be launched on the coast in its place.
They meet up with Spyros’ sister Maria (Irene Papas) and her companion Anna (Gia Scala), two local resistance members who were once caught and tortured by the Germans before escaping.
German forces persistently pursue the operation, and Oberleutnant Muesel (Walter Gotell), while searching for a doctor for Franklin (whose leg has gangrene), leads the group to be eventually captured in the town of Mandrakos.
Stavrou diverts the Germans while being questioned by SS Hauptsturmführer Sessler (George Mikell), and the squad overpowers their captives.
