HoYoverse’s action RPG Zenless Zone Zero has officially expanded its PC presence after previously launching exclusively through the Epic Games Store. Its arrival on Steam marks a major step for the game’s distribution strategy and adds momentum to ongoing speculation that other HoYoverse titles like Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail may eventually follow.
The game’s Steam release also comes with official Steam Deck support, earning a “Playable” rating. However, as detailed by performance testing from SteamDeckHQ, the experience requires several compromises to maintain stability on Valve’s handheld system.
Steam Deck Performance Shows Mixed Stability
Despite optimistic early impressions from some players and community reports on ProtonDB, real-world testing paints a more restrained picture. The game includes two major gameplay segments—exploration in the overworld and structured combat encounters—and both behave differently on Steam Deck hardware.
In the overworld, performance issues are most noticeable. Frame drops and stuttering occur frequently even on low settings, with performance dipping into the 30 FPS range and occasionally lower when moving through busier areas. These issues remain consistent enough that higher frame rate targets become difficult to sustain.
Combat sections perform slightly better due to their enclosed design, often allowing higher frame rates. However, intense animations and special abilities can still trigger sudden drops, sometimes briefly falling into the 20s. While these spikes are short, they can interrupt timing during more demanding encounters.
Based on testing observations, the most stable experience on Steam Deck is achieved by locking the game at 30 FPS with reduced graphical settings. While medium presets are still usable, occasional dips persist, especially during combat-heavy moments or visually dense effects.

At lower settings, Zenless Zone Zero remains visually strong due to its stylized art direction and animation quality. However, pushing beyond 30 FPS introduces instability that affects both exploration and combat flow. As a result, performance reviewers recommend prioritizing consistency over visual fidelity.
Community Expectations vs Reality on Handheld Play
Early community expectations suggested smoother performance, with some users reporting higher frame rates under ideal conditions. However, broader testing highlights that those results are not consistently achievable across gameplay scenarios.
The Steam Deck “Playable” badge reflects partial compatibility, but it also comes with limitations such as touchscreen-dependent launcher interaction and occasional UI scaling issues. These factors reinforce that while the game is fully playable, it is not fully optimized for handheld performance.
