Xenoblade Chronicles 2 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition introduces sharper visuals and improved image quality over the original release.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition offers a noticeable technical upgrade over its original Nintendo Switch release, according to a new performance analysis from Digital Foundry.

The latest version enhances image quality, improves frame rates, and significantly upgrades the handheld experience, making it one of the most polished ways to play Monolith Soft’s acclaimed RPG.

The analysis compares the Switch 2 Edition with the original 2017 release across multiple technical categories.

Switch 2 Edition offers smoother gameplay and improved visuals

According to Digital Foundry, the upgraded version features better edge detail, improved texture quality, higher-resolution grass, and more stable image reconstruction. While the game still appears to render internally at around 720p in docked mode, the final image benefits from advanced upscaling techniques that produce a much cleaner presentation.

Lighting and post-processing have also been refined, with less aggressive bloom, improved ambient occlusion, and sharper texture streaming. Some pre-rendered cutscenes also appear to use higher-quality video files.

Performance sees one of the biggest improvements. The original Nintendo Switch version targeted 30 FPS, often dropping below that during exploration and cutscenes. On Switch 2, the game now runs at 60 FPS for most gameplay, although occasional frame drops can still occur during demanding scenes.

The analysis also points to substantial improvements in portable play. The original Switch version rendered at approximately 360p in handheld mode with heavy sharpening, while the Switch 2 Edition delivers a much sharper 1080p-like presentation through enhanced image reconstruction.

Although the internal rendering resolution is estimated to be around 468p, the final output appears significantly cleaner, with more stable edges and improved visual clarity. Handheld mode also benefits from the same 60 FPS target as docked play, making portable gameplay considerably smoother.

Overall, Digital Foundry concludes that the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition represents a meaningful technical leap for Xenoblade Chronicles 2, bringing modern image quality and performance improvements to one of the platform’s most celebrated RPGs.
