Kay Cannon’s Blockers was released as a comedy film revolving around teenagers trying to lose their virginity while their parents try their best to prevent it. The 102-minute film stars John Cena, Leslie Mann, and Ike Barinholtz in the main roles.
Blockers centers on a parent trio who find out that their respective daughters have formed a unique pact, one that involves exploring adulthood on their prom night. An entertaining adventure ensues, during which the parents and their daughters begin to understand and trust each other.
John Cena plays the role of Mitchell Mannes, while Leslie Mann plays Lisa Decker, and Ike stars in the role of Hunter Lockwood. Besides the main parents, the rest of the cast of Blockers consists of Kathryn Newton as Julie, Geraldine Vishwanathan as Kayla, Gideon Adlon as Sam, and Ramona Young as Angelica.
Blockers ended up being a successful film with a box office collection of $94 million, making it a recent hit in the sex comedy genre. While the plot of this Cannon film is predictable, it does have hilarious scenes and jokes that many would appreciate.
Filming Locations
With cinematographer Russ Alsobrook, Blockers has been filmed in Atlanta, Georgia. Principal shooting for the comedy movie starring John Cena began in May of 2017, which is considered the best time to visit Atlanta.
Familiar places around Georgia can be spotted in Blockers once in a while, but the movie was only shot in a few places to keep the production easy and manageable. Ike’s character Hunter had a falling scene in the movie and ended up being injured during the filming process.
Coming back to the filming spots, places like Hyatt Regency, located at Peachtree Street, Atlanta, can be spotted in Blockers. Situated in Downtown Atlanta, this business hotel is a fascinating 22-story building that contains more than a thousand rooms and other entertainment facilities.
It also hosts tons of parties and events, and many believe that Dragon Con, an exciting Atlanta annual event, was taking place at the hotel while the crew of Blockers was shooting there. This popular convention is filled with many gaming, music, and art events, along with a bunch of existing cosplays from people all over the city.
Hyatt Regency from Atlanta has previously been a filming location for projects like Keeping Up with the Joneses and Sharky’s Machine. For the high school and university scenes, the Blockers crew had to allegedly travel to Emory University located at 201 Dowman Dr, Downtown Atlanta.
Within the suburban neighborhood of Druid Hills, Emory University is a great research institute known for its academic excellence, as well as a vibrant and fun campus. Not many know this, but Atlanta University is also the place where Stranger Things was filmed.
Another location that was a part of Blockers is Grant Park, which is located at Cherokee Ave. Occupying an area of over 130 acres, this greenery-filled park is one of the oldest places in Atlanta. The neighborhood is where most of the scenes were shot for the whole film.
While the producers haven’t revealed the exact locations of Lisa’s, Mithcell’s, and Hunter’s homes, it is most likely that the exteriors were filmed in the Grant Park neighborhood located in Atlanta. With a zoo, museum, and various other fun places to hang out, the Grant Park area is a great place to settle in.
This isn’t a popular filming location, as the only other films that took place here are Alvin and the Chipmunks, Everything Happens to Me, and Senior Year.
Most of the interior scenes of Blockers have been filmed at Blackhall Studios, which is now called the Shadowbox Studios. This film and television studio is located in southeast Atlanta and was only a few months old when the Blockers crew started filming there.
The huge studio was built to increase the options available to Atlanta-based movie and TV show projects and had all kinds of sets ranging from sizes 20,000 to 40,000 square feet. This studio in Atlanta also happens to have the tallest set and has a dedicated building for filming any special effect projects.
Blackhall Studio’s first movie was Godzilla: King of Monsters, while others filmed here include Jumanji: The Next Level, Venom, Jungle Cruise, and The Tomorrow War. Well-known TV shows like Step Up and Ms. Marvel were also shot right here at the Shadowbox Studios.
For now, the hilarious comedy Blockers is available to stream on Prime Video, Netflix, or Apple TV+.
