A surprising World of Warcraft bug recently turned the Moon Guard US server into the site of an unexpected outbreak after the Withering Contagion debuff escaped its intended dungeon and spread through major cities. The issue quickly caught players’ attention as Stormwind and other social hubs became filled with green explosions and rapidly spreading damage-over-time effects before Blizzard released a hotfix to stop the glitch.
The incident was first highlighted by players on social media and documented by community members, with WoWHead reporting on the unusual behavior. Videos shared online showed large groups of players being infected in popular gathering areas, creating one of the game’s most memorable bug-related events in recent years.
Dragonflight debuff unexpectedly reaches capital cities
The bug involved Withering Contagion, a damage-over-time debuff normally encountered inside the Brackenhide Hollow dungeon from the Dragonflight expansion. Under normal circumstances, the effect spreads to nearby players within a limited radius during dungeon encounters.
However, for reasons Blizzard has not officially explained, the debuff somehow escaped its intended location and began affecting players outside the dungeon. The issue appeared during the current Dragonflight Timewalking event, leading some community members to speculate that the event may have unintentionally contributed to the glitch, although Blizzard has not confirmed the cause.
As the debuff spread, players reported seeing green slime explosions and area-of-effect markers throughout Stormwind, including near the Trader’s Post and Cathedral Square. The outbreak also reached Goldshire, one of the game’s busiest social locations, where videos showed players repeatedly being infected as the debuff jumped between nearby characters.
Blizzard responds quickly with a hotfix
Unlike some memorable bugs from World of Warcraft’s early years, the Withering Contagion outbreak was relatively short-lived. Blizzard quickly deployed a hotfix that prevented the debuff from continuing to spread outside its intended environment.
Although the issue was resolved within a short period, it immediately reminded longtime players of an infamous World of Warcraft incident from 2005 involving the Corrupted Blood debuff. That earlier outbreak became one of gaming’s most well-known unintended events and was later referenced by researchers studying disease transmission and human behavior during public health emergencies.
