Mahershala Ali’s latest film, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, is off to a strong start with critics ahead of its theatrical release. The Bassam Tariq-directed action thriller has reportedly reached a 100% Tomatometer score from early reviews, while its critical reception has also produced an 82/100 Metacritic score.
The film premiered at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, where Ali’s performance and Tariq’s distinctive approach to the action genre became major talking points. Although Rotten Tomatoes’ individual movie page is still updating its review count, the film has already attracted overwhelmingly positive early reactions.
Mahershala Ali Leads a Story About Faith, Grief and Fatherhood
Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother follows Latif, played by Ali, a deeply religious Muslim hitman whose life changes after the sudden death of his wife. Left to care for his children, including a newborn, Latif finds himself caught between his responsibilities as a father, his religious beliefs, and the violent world that provides his livelihood.
Rather than presenting Latif as a conventional action hero, Tariq uses the character to explore morality, grief, and the conflict between faith and violence. Rotten Tomatoes describes the film as a story about a man struggling to balance “work, faith and fatherhood” while protecting his children.
The cast also includes John Cho, Giancarlo Esposito, Abubakr Ali, Tramell Tillman and Tiffany Boone. Cho plays Pastor Hwan Yoon, a former soldier whose radical religious movement brings Latif into a dangerous confrontation.
Critics Are Praising Ali’s Performance
Early reviews have particularly highlighted Ali’s restrained performance. The film has been described as a character-driven thriller that combines bursts of violence with a much more introspective story about family and belief.
The Guardian gave the movie four out of five stars, describing it as a stylish neo-Western thriller while emphasizing its focus on a family attempting to reconcile Muslim faith with grief and their surroundings.
Other early reactions have been similarly enthusiastic. The Wrap praised Ali as “astounding” in what it called a revelatory action thriller, while Mashable described the movie as an original and visually striking work.
