Wit Studio President Says One Piece Is “A Treasure Japan Can Be Proud Of” Ahead of Studio’s Remake Release

Wit Studio president George Wada has described One Piece as “a treasure Japan can be proud of” ahead of the studio’s upcoming remake, The One Piece. The new anime is being developed as a fresh adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s manga, separate from Toei Animation’s long-running series, with the goal of making Luffy’s original adventure accessible to another generation of viewers.

George Wada Calls One Piece a Japanese Treasure

Speaking with Polygon, Wada emphasized the cultural importance of One Piece and the responsibility Wit Studio has in adapting such a massive franchise. He described the series as

“a treasure Japan can be proud of”,

while explaining that the studio has approached the project by absorbing the enormous world established throughout Oda’s manga.

“We have deeply absorbed the vast world of One Piece from its enormous body of source material,”

Wada told Polygon. He added that Wit Studio’s task was to depict the beginning of Luffy’s adventure as “a new voyage” while retaining the excitement that made the original story so influential.

That philosophy is also reflected in the studio’s approach to the remake’s visuals. Wada described the goal as creating

“fresh imagery clothed in the air of the present day,”

suggesting that The One Piece will modernize the presentation without abandoning the identity of Oda’s work.

The One Piece Will Start From the East Blue Saga

The One Piece is scheduled to premiere worldwide on Netflix in February 2027. Its first season will consist of seven episodes, released simultaneously, with a combined runtime of approximately 300 minutes. Netflix confirms that the season will adapt roughly the first 50 chapters of Oda’s manga, covering the East Blue Saga through Luffy’s encounter with Sanji.

The remake is being produced by WIT Studio, with Attack on Titan veteran Masashi Koizuka directing. Netflix has also emphasized that the series will use modern visual technology to provide a fresh yet familiar interpretation of Luffy’s earliest adventures.

For Wit Studio, the challenge is therefore not simply recreating scenes that longtime fans already know. Wada’s comments suggest that The One Piece is intended to preserve the heart and world of Oda’s manga while presenting the beginning of Luffy’s journey in a way that can connect with viewers discovering One Piece for the first time.
