But after a series of unfortunate events, the former CEO has become the talk of the town for wrong things. Fans, old and new, in the k-pop scene still wonder why YG was arrested. As 1/3 of the ‘Seo Taji & The Boys’, Yang Hyun Suk became one of the most popular hip hop artists during the first-gen era of k-pop idols. Even after he made his debut as a solo artist and later on started his company, i.e., YG Entertainment, he was only succeeding.
Leading YG Entertainment since 1996, Yang Hyun Suk, aka YG, went on to debut some of the best k-pop idols. Starting from Se7en, he introduced BIGBANG, 2NE1, PSY, AKMU, Blackpink, IKON, and Winner to us. With TREASURE being the youngest k-pop group from YG right now, the company has still not left its shine. But Yang Hyun Suk, aka YG himself, on the other side, has a lot of troubles. From the former CEO himself to the company’s artists, many of them have accusations of drug use, prostitution, corruption, bribery, and even sexual assault.
Why Was YG Arrested?
YG, aka Yang Hyun Suk, hasn’t really been arrested. Several times, Yang Hyun Suk has been accused of several crimes. And every time, he has denied the accusations. Here’s a rundown of the events that have led to the downfall of YG, aka Yang Hyun Suk.
Shinhan Bank’s Preferential Treatment To YG
In 2019, it was revealed that Yang Hyun Suk took a loan of almost $9 million from Shinhan Bank. He used the YG Entertainment building as collateral for the loan. The former CEO took out 3 loans during the time period of 2010 to 2011. By 2017, he repaid the load back in 2017. During the time the building was used as collateral, YG had illegally expanded around 42 sqft throughout the building. According to the reports, several notices were sent to the office requesting to remove the illegally extended areas.
First Nail In The Coffin: The Burning Sun Scandal & The Disposal Trucks
In early 2019, Bigbang’s Seungri was charged with drug use and trafficking to police corruption, bribery, and sexual assault. Known as the ‘Burning Sun’ Scandal, the case ended up shaking the whole company as the fans quickly attacked YG. As the investigation of the Burning Sun Scandal took place in the early months of 2019, fans were keeping an eye on not just Seungri but all the moves YG was making. While Seungri was in police custody for interrogations, fans spotted disposal trucks at the YG Entertainment building.

The trucks came from a company that specialized in safely destroying documents, electronics, and files without anyone knowing. Connecting the dots, fans accused to Yang Suk of helping Seungri get rid of the evidence. Addressing the accusations, Yang Suk revealed that the disposal trucks were scheduled for routine cleanup. As the investigation went on, Yang Suk aka YG was booked for tax evasions. Turned out that Seungri’s club that was under the charges for tax evasion was actually owned by YG.
YG’s Secret Clubs & Tax Evasions
Further investigation revealed that over 5 clubs that Yang Hyun Suk and his brother own have been evading taxes for a long time. Clubs i.e., NB, Love Signal, Gabbia, Moon Night, and Samgeori Byulbam, were registered as general restaurants and paid less tax despite being nightclubs. Receiving the city commission’s request, the detectives went on to investigate Yang Hyun Suk along with Lee Dong Hyung and the CEO of MAKEUS Entertainment. While the detectives agreed that the Burning Sun scandal and YG might have a connection. YG denied having any ‘special’ tax investigation arranged for him and called it a rumor.
YG & The Dinner Parties
In May 2019, YG was accused of providing sexual favors to VIPs, aka his foreign business partners. According to MBN’s ‘Straight’, in 2014, YG hosted a party for his investors. A total of 8 men were present in the meeting, including Yang Hyun Suk and the YG artist. Affiliated with famous adult entertainment establishments closer to YG, there were 25 women presented for the men. When the news got out, YG agreed that he was at the meeting, and he denied the other accusations. But a few witnesses spoke up about the night.

One of the witnesses on the show revealed that the party was held at YG’s club NB. There were a lot of prostitutes every time they went drinking. He also shared that the rich guests would always choose the women. They even went out after dinner. The women would even go on trips abroad on the rich guests’ private jets. It was also reported that Yang Hyun Suk gifted prostitutes with Chanel bags worth around 4 million to 5 million won. The investigation went on till June 2019, and he was under interrogation for over 9 hours.
Finding the circumstantial evidence, the police booked as Yang Hyun Suk as a major suspect.
YG Accused of Saving IKON’s BI
While the fire was still on, another scandal broke out in the YG building. As former YG trainee and troublemaker Han SoHee revealed that she and IKON’s BI used drugs together, things went berserk once again. As soon as the case broke out in public, YG was suspected of hiding BI’s drug use. It was also revealed that Yang Hyun Suk forced the suspect to change his statement and even provided legal counsel for the suspect. Being his usual self, YG denied the claims made against him. Han Sohee revealed everything that YG had told her. Including the trick of sending the idols to Japan when they test positive for drug tests came out, the matter got way out of control.

YG’s Resignation From YG Entertainment
All the scandals had caused the company’s stocks to go down. With IKON’s BI’s drug case joining the mess, YG was down bad. Through a public announcement, Yang Hyun Suk announced that after serving as the CEO for 23 years, he would be leaving all his duties at YG. Being in the public eye, he was getting accused by fans on both sides. While some accused him of saving Seungri and throwing IKON’s BI under the bus. While some accused him of hiding and saving IKON’s BI from getting reported for the drug abuse. But even after handing in the resignation, YG was still controlling YG Entertainment as he is the largest shareholder.
YG & His Habitual Gambling in Las Vegas
In August 2019, JTBC programs Newsroom and Spotlight went on to release more details on Yang Hyun Suk. It was revealed that Yang Hyun Suk arrived at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas in January 2018. Playing ‘baccarat’, he gambled for several days for 17 hours. He gambled an average of ₩4 million KRW ($3,306 USD) per game. According to a former employee, the YG artist stayed at the MGM hotel whenever they were in the States. And if the employees went there with YG, even they got everything for free at the hotel.
It was also revealed that Yang Hyun Suk was the owner of several clubs in Gangnam and Hongdae but received all of the profits in cash, not through the bank. But he was never registered as the owner. The investigation about habitual gambling, illegal foreign transaction exchange, and prostitution solicitation lasted for over 23 hours, with Yang Hyun Suk banned from leaving the country. While denying all the major charges, YG only agreed to the charge of illegal gambling. As the trial came to an end, Yang Hyun Suk was sentenced to pay a fine of 15 million won (US$13,600).
For the BI Drug Case, Yang Hyun Suk attended the trial and denied all accusations made by Han Sohee against him. Recently seen at TREASURE’s 2022 live stage, Yang Hyun Suk was criticized for not wearing a mask and violating covid precautions.
