The 2023 release film, Scream 6 is the sixth installment of the entire Scream franchise. The movie was released on March 10th, 2023, and is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillette. The movie has Jenna Ortega, Courtney Cox, Melissa Barrera, and Mason Gooding alongside the entire main cast that has been with the franchise since the beginning, with a new ensemble of actors also joining the old cast.
The creator of the entire Scream universe, Kevin Williamson, actually announced that Scream 5 and 6 had already been mapped in his brain back when they were still promoting the fourth part of the series. Over the years, the entire original cast of the film expressed an interest in wanting to continue being associated with the film franchise.
The recent Scream films have expressed their wish to take a newer and more gory direction for its future. It has also introduced new characters that relate back to the old, now-dead ones in shocking ones, and this keeps the fans completely invested in the film and its future endeavors.
The fact that Scream would release was made public quite some time ago, and the production process of the film began with bringing the original cast back into their roles. While fans would have loved to see the entire cast together, there was one member from the original cast who expressed their displeasure with the production company and announced their exit from the franchise completely.
Sydney Prescott’s Absence In Scream 6
While the entire cast was acknowledging and expressing their wish to be a part of the recent Scream movie, Neve Campbell, who also was hoping to be a part of the film, expressed her disappointment with the franchise and revealed that the two parties had some disagreements which led to her decision of cutting off ties with the movie totally.
Neve Campbell’s character in the film, Sydney Prescott, has been present since the first movie, and she was actually one of the important main leads who had an entire showdown with the original Ghostface, which she also killed in the original movie. She was the main focus of the films and actually had quite a character growth throughout the movies.
So, it was shocking when Campbell announced her departure from the movie, and it made many questions if the film would hold the same meaning and essence as it did when Campbell was in the movie. We saw Campbell in Scream (2022), and it was right after this that the production for the sixth one started, and she announced on her social media that she would not be appearing in the sixth film.
She revealed that after the success of the fifth film, she expected the makers of the film to realize her worth and importance in the film and all that she added to it, but apparently, that did not offer because when she was being cast for the film, the offer given to her in terms of money that she would receive for working in the film was too low.
She said that she expected the makers to realize her importance and worth in the film and respect that by compensating her properly with an amount equal to her male counterparts. She has been in the industry for long enough and a part of the franchise for at least twenty-five years, but the fact that the producers refused to pay her in a just manner was heartbreaking for her, causing her to make the difficult decision of saying no to the film.
Her fellow Scream actors came in support of her decision, and Courtney Cox even revealed that she missed having shot with Neve but that no matter her decision, she would continue to support her and cheer for her. The Scream franchise is an established business and has been extremely successful in generating great revenue for the makers, so it is disappointing even for fans that producers in Hollywood still refuse to pay equally to both the male and female actors.
While the pay gap is an exhausting fight for the women in the industry, the movie continued on without Neve Campbell’s Character, Sydney Prescott, and did a truly great job at making her absence from the screen natural and seamless. The movie hints at Campbell’s character a few times in the movie and does not disregard her existence as trivial.
The makers know that Prescott’s absence in the movie is a great loss to the movie, but they still try to cover it by addressing it in one of the scenes in the movie, which puts an end to her character’s story by making it seem like Sydney has left the town with her husband and kids to live a peaceful but lowkey life away from the Ghostface’s radar and killer tactics.
