Sonny Vaccaro Fired From Nike
Sonny Vaccaro again came into the limelight when the founder of Nike, Phil Knight, stepped down from his position. Johnny played a pivotal role in transforming Nike’s future from a track shoe business to a basketball shoe business by signing a deal with Michael Jordan for his line named Jordans. Phil ultimately fired Vaccaro from Nike in 1991 in the midst of the company’s meteoric rise.
Vaccaro stated the company did well after firing him. He also did well for themselves. No specific reason was revealed for Nike firing Vaccaro, but everything came down to the power struggle between Knight and Sonny, fighting for the credit for the company’s hike.
According to Sonny, he was the reason behind Nike getting the deal with Michael Jordan; thus, the credit for the hike and expansion of the company in the basketball department would be his, but according to Knight, the trade resulted from several factors. Sonny was a part of the decision, and thus does not deserve 100% of the credit that Vaccaro demanded.
Vaccaro also claimed the upcoming film Air is based on factual information and would prove his claim for the credit true. Another reason Vaccaro claims about deserving the praise for signing the deal with Miachel is initially; Knight wasn’t interested in spending a massive amount of money in signing a single known rookie player; instead, he wanted to sign two-three fresh out-of-college sportsperson for the same amount.
Michael Jordan himself stated he didn’t sign the deal with Nike on Vaccaro’s insistence; instead, his mother, who knew how talented her son was, convinced him to sign the trade. Vaccaro claimed about being investigated by the FBI for corporate espionage after he got fired from Nike. The second person Michael gives credit to for his deal with Nike is George Raveling, who had been convincing him to go with Nike for years.
Michael doesn’t credit Vaccaro for his deal with Nike, as he claimed Sonny did not influence his decision to work with Nike. Vaccaro claims Miachel, Raveling, and Phil are lying as they had to destroy me to be happy. Michael Jordan’s collaboration with Nike for Jordan sneakers has played a significant role in the rise of the company’s revenue.
Thus, everything came down to who was responsible for the hike of the company, the signing of a deal with Michael Jordan, and the struggle to have recognition and credit for the same. Vaccaro still gives credit to Phil for being an open-minded founder who gave him the freedom to use his brain.
Sonny Vaccaro After Nike
Vaccaro did well for himself after getting fired from the renowned sports company Nike. Sonny currently resides in California with his wife and is happy after being retired. After he got fired from Nike, Vaccaro went on to work with rival companies of Nike, including Reebok and Adidas.
Sonny left Reebok in 2007 and hasn’t worked for any other company. Another massive accomplishment of Vaccaro was signing a deal between Kobe Bryant with Adidas for a while until Kobe broke the contract in 2002 to sign with Nike.
