One of the most surprising teams that entered the coaching carousel last season is the Dolphins. After closing the season, they fired Brian Flores, the head coach, in less than 24 hours. Most of the team chose to make some changes at the top, and there were a total of 10 changes. The Dolphins were winning seasons continuously.
Meanwhile, Brian forged a stature as one of the NFL’s most powerful tactical coaches, and it was considered that Miami was the team that was rising to the top continuously. As Brian Flores got fired, problems existed around the shortage of black coaches in the NFL, and this became major news following the weeks as Brian filed a case against several teams under racial bias in NFL.
Why did Brian Flores was fired by the Dolphins?
Many fans were shocked when The Dolphins sacked Brian Flores after winning eight out of nine games they played. Stephen Ross, the owner of the team, did not have sight of on-field performance. He explained that an organization could only work if everyone is collaborative and works well with each other.
Furthermore, he also added that he did not think that the Dolphins as an organization were working as an organization. Later Berry Jackson from Miami Herald said that Brian Flores was looking out for more control and was looking to eliminate Chris Grier, the general manager’s power on free working and other draft pickups and decisions.
Ian Rapoport from the NFL network said that Stephen Ross preferred Chris Grier above Brian Flores between the ongoing tension and frustration between Flores and Grier. Before the news of the firing, it was thought that the head coach, Brian Flores, had probably saved his job with a robust finish to the current season.
After beginning with 1-7, the Dolphins continued to win their eighth game out of nine games and fell half a game short of the playoffs. A thing to note is that Miami did not qualify for the playoffs in Brian’s tenure. The team majorly overachieved. The team began their season in 2019 with 0-7, but they reached 5-4 in the nine games that they played, and they continued their form with a good season, 10-6 in 2020.
But as per reports, Brian had a strained relationship with the Tua Tagovailoa. A Tagovailoa player, Ryan Fitzpatrick, who played for the team in 2020, recently said that the relationship between Brian Flores and Tagovailo created a toll on the quarterback.
Why was Brian Flores not hired as the Head Coach?
In the off-season, Brian was interviewed with the Broncos, Texans, Giants, and Saints for the head coach position. But the lawsuit that he has filed against the three teams may decrease his chances of getting one of the major positions as a head coach in these teams.
In the case, Brain blamed the teams for discriminating and pointed Giants and Broncos shammed him in the interviews with no intention of hiring him as the coach. Sometime after the filing of the lawsuit, the Saints hired Dennis Allen, and the Texans hired Lovie Smith. Brian also accused the Texans of firing him from their coaching findings as a retaliation for the lawsuit that Flores filed.
Did the Steelers employ Brian Flores?
Sometime after three weeks after the lawsuit filing, Brian Flores was hired by the Steelers as a linebacker coach and a senior defensive assistant under Mike Tomlin, coach. He was hired because he is a very well-qualified coach, said the owner of the Steelers, Art Rooney II. Tomlin also pointed out that the hiring of Brian was also done because of the off-season development that took place.
Some reports in March said that he did not want him to feel alone, as if he was stranded on an island. Brian’s joining an NFL staff in the current season allows the 41-year-old to have a major role as a head coach prospect again in what looks like a quieter, still active coaching role in this upcoming off-season.
He has been doing his job well and what actually happened backstage is still unknown, but we believe that all these problems will be over as soon as possible, and Brian will get back the recognition and respect he deserves.
