Suguru Geto was the primary antagonist of the Jujutsu Kaisen Universe till his demise following the events of the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons (Jujutsu Kasien 0: The Movie). He was one of the 4 Special Grade Sorcerers on the planet. Special Grade is a ranking that is given out to those with powers that are beyond comprehension. That should tell you just how powerful Suguru was. However, he wasn’t always like this.
What set Suguru apart was his Innate Technique: Cursed Spirit Manipulation. After defeating a Cursed Spirit he absorbs them into a small orb which he then swallows. After that, he can summon them at will and can use them however he deems fit. If the difference between their levels is more than 2 levels he can absorb the cursed spirit without defeating them. As far as we know there is no limit to how many spirits he can absorb.
Apart from that he has a massive reserve of cursed energy and a deep understanding of the subjecting giving him access to more advanced techniques. Though he may look like a Shikigami User the technique is very different. Shikigami are monsters resembling cursed spirits that the user can summon as their familiars. What Suguru summons are cursed spirits themselves. And unlike most shinigami users Suguru is an expert at close combat and martial arts.
What Happened To Suguru Geto?
Suguru’s transition into a villain started after he failed to protect Riko Amanai from the Time Vessel Association. A Jujutsu Sorcerer must protect humans as they cannot perceive cursed spirits. But seeing the lengths they were willing to go to kill an innocent young girl made him have conflicting views about the rest of humanity. Seeing them rejoice after seeing Amanai’s corpse broke him a little and filled him with self-doubt.
He did his best to push them down further and further. To keep his head down and to just do his job. But as time went by it becomes increasingly difficult. Amanai’s death took a lot about Satoru Gojo as well. He perfected his Limitless Technique by using it in tandem with Reversed Cursed Technique so that he can have it enabled perpetually. He had become the strongest and started to take on missions on his own leaving Suguru to do the same.
It was during that time Suguru had an opportunity to talk to Yuki Tsukomo a fellow Special Grade Sorcerer. Even though she is Special Grade Sorcerer she has no affiliation with them. She feels as if Jujutsu Sorcerer treats the symptom and not the cause. She explains how curses are born from the curse energy that leaks from the non-sorcerer. And if the whole population was to become jujutsu sorcerer curses would seize to manifest.
Suguru offered an alternative. Kill all the non-sorcerer rather than turning them into sorcerers. Tsukomo agreed that it might be the easiest way to do it. However, she is not crazy enough to attempt it. We can assume this was where Suguru first formed the idea. Yu Haibara was one of his underclassmen and his death pushed Suguru to the edge but he did not break. That doesn’t happen till after when he was on a solo mission to a village.
After exorcising the spirit Suguru saw that the villagers were keeping hostage two young girls Mimiko and Nanako due to their abilities. Even though the cursed spirit responsible was removed the villagers believed the girls were at fault and wanted to kill them. It was at the moment Suguru Geto breaks. He burned down the entire village killing its 120+ residents in the process. He rescued the girls and brought them into his fold.
He would then go on to take over the Time Vessel Association and other similar associations. He used their money and influence to increase find more sorcerers to join his team. From his millions of followers, he was able to collect curses big and small adding them to his collection. In the end, his thirst for power is what led to his downfall as he died at the hands of Yuta Okkoutsu. Even though Suguru Geto died his body lived on.
Where Is Suguru Geto Now?
After his death, Kenjaku found him and transplanted his brain into Suguru’s body. Then he used reversed curse technique to heal Suguru’s body. You can see the stitching scar along Suguru’s forehead in Season 1. For those who don’t know Kenjauku is a Jujutsu Sorcerer whose over 1000 years old. His innate technique allows him to switch bodies between other Jujutsu Scorcerors and potentially live for as long as he has new bodies to possess.
Not only that he can use the knowledge and skill that belonged to the body’s original owner as his own. He can even use the techniques that belonged to the previous body he possessed. It is unclear whether he can possess non-sorcerers. It might be possible but doing so would have no advantage for him. His mission is to evolve all of humanity using cursed energy. Throughout the centuries he has committed several atrocities in the name of evolution.
We are going to a lot more of his presence in the Shibuya Incident Arc. This arc will be covered in Season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen and it’s just step one of Kenjaku’s plan. In a nutshell, he has been trying to remove the 6 Eyes from the playing board for a very long time. The Shibuya Incident is his elaborate plan to eliminate Satoru Gojo and thus level the playing field. It’s one of the most dramatic arcs in the series that will leave you on the edge of your seats the whole time.
