The major reason behind River Phoenix and Martha Plimpton’s break up was the former’s inclination towards drugs. It was the summer of 1989 when Martha took the initiative and ended their relationship.
According to the actress, his overuse of drugs became toxic not just for his health but also for their affair. So, she felt the need to bring an end. The late actor, River, was heartbroken and emotionally shattered at the time, following their split.
River Phoenix and Martha Plimpton were together for four years. It was not easy, of course, to end the relationship. But, she was tired of stopping him from drug usage. During an interview, River said, “We have no plans to get married or anything like that. But, we are soulmates.”
At the time of splitting up, Martha Plimpton realized that she needed to bring change in him. Fighting, begging, and screaming wouldn’t help or stop him from using drugs. River madly loved her and was also emotionally dependent on her. So, he was shocked, too, about her willingness to part ways with him.
