The medical drama series, New Amsterdam, has been one of the most loved series since its debut. Last month, the last and final season of the series was released. Things are not the same this time. The main lead of the show, Freema Agyeman, who played the role of Dr. Helen Sharpe, has decided to quit the show in its final season. This news has already made everyone sad, knowing that their favorite star won’t be there in the final season.
But what happened all of a sudden? Why did Freema Agyeman decide to leave New Amsterdam in its final season? In this article, we will learn more about the actress and the show and therefore look into the possible reasons behind her exit from the show.
Who is Freema Agyeman?
Actress Freema Agyeman is from the UK. She first gained notoriety for playing Martha Jones, the Doctor’s companion, in the BBC science fiction series Doctor Who. She also received praise for her roles as Crown Prosecutor Alesha Phillips in the ITV legal drama Law & Order: UK, Amanita Caplan in the Netflix sci-fi drama Sense8, and Dr. Helen Sharpe in the NBC drama series New Amsterdam.
Agyeman received plaudits for her portrayal of Martha in 2007 at a number of award shows. She won the Best Newcomer honor at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards in June. She was one of the top four finalists for Most Popular Actress at the 13th National Tv Awards in October after winning the People’s Choice award for Favorite Female Television Personality at the 5th Screen Nation Movie & TV Awards.
What’s New Amsterdam all about?
Based on Eric Manheimer’s book Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital, the American medical drama television series New Amsterdam debuted on NBC on September 25, 2018. Starring in the show are Ryan Eggold, Jocko Sims, Anupam Kher, Freema Agyeman, Janet Montgomery, and Tyler Labine, and it was developed by David Schulner. The fifth season, the last, debuted on September 20, 2022.
In New Amsterdam, we follow Dr. Max Goodwin as he takes over as medical director of one of the oldest public hospitals in the United States. He aims to modernize the run-down hospital by knocking down its bureaucracy and delivering first-rate patient care.
Why did Freema Agyeman Leave New Amsterdam?
The actress released a statement to indicate that she will no longer be playing Dr. Helen Sharpe in the program, a part she created in the first season and has performed ever since. According to the show’s creator, David Schulner, Agyeman had previously indicated an interest in quitting after the third season. The moment was just appropriate, in Freema Agyeman’s opinion, to move on from the Helen Sharpe role.
The actress is able to stay in her native United Kingdom since she has already signed up for a new part in the six-episode television series Dreamland. Her decision to leave could have something to do with wanting to spend more time at her home. Keep in mind that the whole New Amsterdam cast and crew had to cope with shooting in the middle of the world health crisis, particularly during the previous three years. That must have been challenging for all of them, particularly with regard to the travel aspect. As a consequence, several cast members have left their respective series.
What Did Agyaman say in her Depart Speech?
As a departing statement, she said that being in the body of Ms. Helen Sharpe for the last several years has allowed her to connect with a large number of you and experience the ups and downs of your emotional involvement. She also told that her journey throughout the show was very good and appreciates the love she got from all her fans.
