“The Fosters” Season 1 debuted on ABC Family in 2013. The five seasons of the series follow the daily activities of two parents, as well as a group of foster, biological, and adoptive kids. The surname of the family, Adams Foster, is a combination of the last names of the parents, Lena Adams & Stef Foster, who both adopt it after starting a family together. In the cast, performers like Izabela Vidovic from “Wonder” and Tanner Buchanan from “He’s All That” also make cameos as peers of Jude, one of the foster children raised by the Adams Foster family.
Even though “The Fosters” came to an end in 2018, Callie’s (Maia Mitchell) and Mariana’s (Cierra Ramirez) lives have progressed in the spin-off show “Good Trouble,” which debuted in 2019. The pilot episode of the series, which picks up a few years after “The Fosters,” shows that the two siblings are now living in LA, where Mariana as a software engineer and Callie is working as a law clerk. The third season of “Good Trouble” came to an end on September 8, 2021. Among a few other dramatic moments, Season 3 ends with Callie stating to her boss, “I’m leaving?”
Let’s talk about the reason why Maia Mitchell’s character Callie Left Good Trouble on screen and Maia left the show off screen. We’ll also talk about the possibility of her return.
Why Callie Left Good Trouble?
Callie broke our hearts and soul when she left Good Trouble, as we witnessed one of our favorite characters leave the show. If you haven’t watched Good Trouble season 4 yet, then now is the time to turn away as there’ll be some spoilers ahead. In episode two of season 4, we saw Callie move from The Coterie, the shared residence in Los Angeles where she used to live with her sister Marianna and their friends, to begin a new life in Washington D.C. after getting her dream job with the ACLU.
In the episode, Callie called her parents and brother Jude to town so she could tell Marianna the news. Marianna was understandably stunned to learn that her sister (and best friend) was going across the country in two days. The remainder of the episode had Callie saying her goodbyes to her loved ones and friends, and it was, to put it lightly, emotional to see. Since it was Maia Mitchell’s farewell episode, there were actually just as many tears shed for her as there were for her on-screen character.

Why Maia Left Good Trouble?
After 5 years on The Fosters show and 4 on its Freeform spin-off show, Maia Mitchell ended her run as Callie Adams Foster. The reason for Mitchell’s departure is COVID-19. After being separated from her family for two years, the Australian star chose to return home to be closer to them. After filming the Season 3 finale, Mitchell left for Australia, but she agreed to travel to America to shoot her last episodes.
Maia said that she was returning to Australia to be with her family. Almost ten years have passed since the 28-year-old actress began playing Callie. She relocated from her native Australia to the US for the role. Maia said, “When I was quite young, I did relocate from Australia to America. If I’m being completely honest, being away from family has been incredibly difficult for me. I basically spent my whole 20s abroad, which I probably wouldn’t have done if it weren’t for my job”.
As Maia told that the global epidemic served as the tipping point. She wanted to be with her family, but she kept filming Good Trouble. It simply got to be a little too much for her, she admitted. “My immediate thought was, “I need to be able to be at home right now.” When you experience something like that, things become quite apparent, and she just felt it was time to put her family and her mental health first. It was an extremely difficult choice for her.
Will Callie Return To Good Trouble?
Although it’s uncertain if Callie will return to the show, Maia has been spotted in the country again. As per her Instagram, she was in New York in June, and now she’s back in California, where she was staying when the series was being filmed. Additionally, she and Cierra reconnected in one of the nicest BFF TikToks we’ve seen before, and one of her recent posts shows her interacting with members of her Coterie family. Obviously, not everything we see on social media is authentic, but might there be a return in the works? Hopefully, yes.
