Chance “The Rapper” Pena is the newest addition to the voice coaches on NBC’s Emmy Award-winning musical competition reality tv series “The Voice.” A Chicago native, this talented artist will be part of the coaches on The Voice, that will aid and guide the contestants on their way to musical stardom.
If you’re unfamiliar with Chance, it’s very likely you have heard or seen his work, as he is one of the most successful independent rappers of his generation, having achieved commercial success and critical acclaim with his albums “Coloring Book” and “Acid Rap.” He has won three Grammy awards for his work on Coloring Book, becoming the first artist in history to win a Grammy for streaming-only music.
Not only is he good with a microphone poppin’ some sick lyrics, but he’s also an actor and has had some on-screen performances for major networks like HBO. Let’s take a moment and see some of the work that made Chance The Rapper a man worthy of sitting in the red chairs of NBC’s The Voice!
Who Is Chance The Rapper?
Chance’s full name is Chancelor Johnathan Bennett. He’s 30 years old and was born in Chicago, and his father worked as a community organizer under that city’s major, Harold Washington, and former president of the United States, Barack Obama. Since a young age, he’s been familiar with grassroots community work, and he incorporated some of that into his performing talent.
Influenced by music since a very young age, he’s always been listening to some tunes, be those old Billie Holiday records that his parents used to play, to the pop sounds of Michael Jackson, or the aggressive lyrics of Kanye West, or something laid-back like jazz, Chance The Rapper knew that he wanted to work and have a relation to the performing arts.
As such, he began rapping in the sixth grade and has never stopped since. And though his high-school teachers mocked his aspirations to become a rapper, he continued and conquered success.

How Did Chance The Rapper Become Famous?
Chance began his “formal” rapping career after he got suspended for possession of narcotics and took it upon himself to record his own mixtape called “10 Day” in 2011. Little did he know that that mixtape would pave the way for his stardom. He uploaded the mixtape to a website, and it became viral, grabbing the attention of local and then international media.
After 2011, it was on for Chance! He went on to work in collaborations with consolidated artists like Childish Gambino, Action Bronson, and BJ the Chicago Kid. After that, in 2014, he started doing commercials with brands like Dockers and went on tour with other hip-hop and rap artists across the United States.
Chance Joins The Voice Season 23 As Coach
In 2016, Chance The Rapper had already established himself as a highly successful performing artist, thanks partly to his work on Kanye West’s “The Life of Pablo,” where he contributed to over five tracks. This experience proved to be a pivotal moment in his career and helped pave the way for his third mixtape titled “Coloring Book,” which garnered millions of streams on Apple Music and landed him on the US Billboard 200 chart.
After the success of his mixtape, Chance’s next big break came in 2017 when he conquered the Grammys. He received no fewer than seven nominations and won three for his outstanding work.
Following his successes, Chance went on to work on soundtracks for feature films and appeared in Super Bowl commercials. But it seems his success didn’t stop there, as the talented artist recently agreed to take on a new role as a coach in the 23rd season of the popular musical competition reality series “The Voice.” NBC has announced that he will join the show alongside Niall Horan and the regular hosts, Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton.
With Chance “The Rapper” Pena joining the show, we can expect to see a new injection of talent and creativity in the upcoming seasons of “The Voice.” This remarkable artist has established himself as a shining star in the music industry and continues to captivate audiences with each new release and performance.
