Silvio Horta’s comedy series, Ugly Betty, is inspired by the Colombian television series Yo Soy Betty, La Fea, a show that has actually been an inspiration for quite a few international remakes. ABC”s Ugly Betty worked pretty well with the audience for its first three seasons, but the fourth season seemed to have not gelled well with fans.
Its first season launched on September 28th, 2006, and followed the story of a girl who manages to score a job at a high-end fashion company, despite her sheer lack of sense of fashion. It is a story of how a relatively ugly Betty finds her path in the harsh and criticizing industry, all with the help of her hard work and optimism.
The show cast actress America Ferrera for the role of the title character, Betty Suarez, Eric Mabius as Daniel Meade, Ana Ortiz as Hilda Suarez, Vennessa Williams as Wilhelmina Slater, Becki Newton as Amanda Tanen, and many others as recurring appearances and guest roles. Though the show had gained immense popularity and was much loved by fans, producers of the series decided to cancel it still because of the drop in its ratings when the show was moved from its usual slot to the Friday evening slot.
The show’s popularity got to such a point that it almost became a cultural phenomenon that was the source of inspiration for tons of remakes and parodies. The show also managed to create a positive impact on people’s lives in reality by having broken down the stereotype that society generally holds against the people it considers not conventionally good-looking.
While many fans have been left hoping for a remake or a comeback, or even the release of the promised movie, there is one specific character we wish to draw your focus toward, mainly to revisit the life of one of the main characters of the show, Hilda Suarez, played by Ana Ortiz.
Hilda’s Love Life In The Show
Ana Ortiz very convincingly plays the role of Betty’s elder sister, Hilda Suarez. She is the responsible and ambitious one among the two. Out of the two, she is more likely to express herself without any hesitation; she is bold, competitive, and smart, not in the way that Betty is, but smart all the same. Though to maintain the difference between the two sisters, Hilda’s character is put through a harder path just to show that Hilda is the one who makes all the bad decisions.
Throughout the seasons, she was never shown to be the one with a stable romantic relationship. Instead, she suffered from heartbreaks for the most part until the entry of one of her high school flings, Bobby Talercio. Prior to his entry, Hilda had been with the father of her child, some coach, and, lastly, a politician. The father of her child, Santos, had agreed to be with her but was revealed to have died in one of the seasons.
The coach, Tony Diaz, was her second fling, but it was revealed that not only was he her child’s P.E. coach but also that he was married. He had been lying to her about having filed for a divorce, but his wife had approached Hilda to reveal the truth to her, causing them to break up. Her third relationship in the show is with Archie Rodriquez, which seems to be going well but considering it is Hilda, she manages to ruin it by sleeping with the fourth guy, Bobby.
Bobby is brought into the show as Hilda’s high school fling, who is still hung up on her. The two sleep together while Hilda is in a relationship with Archie. It does not take her too long to get pregnant again, this time with Bobby’s child. The news of an incoming child scares the daylight out of Bobby, and he runs away, only for him to return and confess that he is ready to be a father.
Not much is said about their relationship except that they go to the doctor’s together only to find that the child is not alive. Considering this as a vulnerable time for Hilda, he decides to stay with her, cheers her up, and even takes a serious step ahead in their relationship by taking Hilda to meet his parents.
The young couple realizes that after the news of the death of their unborn child, nothing could really faze them and that together the two could go through the hardest patches of life and still make it out alive. It is in the second last episode of the fourth season, “The Past Presents the Future”, that the happy couple finally ties the knot and gets married to each other.
